SPH(Smiles Per) is all I want. DH while tired is recipe for disaster. I get paid to work not to ride bikes.

this is a great topic... but in mtbking, I say miles don't matter, its all about elevation... when I used to commute to long beach once or twice a week from fully, my miles were way higher... but now much stronger rider than 5 years ago...
goal is always more than last year... 200k plus elevation...

I have only used Strava since April. Only have 550 miles and 73,000'. First year to set goals coming up in 2019. I'll start with 1000 miles and 100,000' as jumping off point. Fingers crossed for good miles and no injuries in 2019!

Yep! Before kids I would stress about getting off work in time to ride so I could stay on track with riding a certain number of times/miles per week. I quickly realized after my son was born that I wouldn’t have that stress anymore.

Now if I can’t ride for awhile I just go out and have fun and often end up heading to Irvine park after some fun at Oaks, sessioning some drops off stone ledges and hitting some stairs for fun over there. If I get in a groove of riding more I still don’t obsess about mileage and climbing. This is why I got a pass to SkyPark.. small (climbing) price to pay for a lot of fun.

With that said I do like longer rides and will jump back in that game when my life can handle it.

I go by hours. But getting in hours is easy for me. And I wish I didn't have a real job (except for the fact that it pays for my riding!) so I could ride more!

    Goals:
Ride my bike on fun trails as much as I can when I feel like it and don't have something else I want to do.
Avoid a visit to the ER as a result of a bicycle mishap.
    Extend my range a little.

    Data:
I don't have any cumulative stats for miles, number of rides, total vertical feet climbed, etc.
So far, my data is good on goal 2 and 3. Made it to December with no trips to the ER and hope to keep that streak going for the remainder of the calendar year. Knock on wood. I included more trips down the tougher local trails this year than in the past.
I think I had more rides beyond 3000' of climbing than any prior year, but I didn't keep any totals.

    Fails:
I didn't get to any awesome new trails this year.* Didn't ride out of state. Didn't even hit any bike parks.

On the other hand, I surfed over 35 times this year, compared to 5-10 per year over the prior 5 years.

*Correction: I did ride Wrightwood this year. That was new for me, and a lot of fun, mostly because of the company.

I got 39 rides in so far (compared to just six last year, mostly due to some health issues). Honestly, starting the year I thought I was done riding, it hurt, often made me sick during and after, and just was no fun, even the downhills. I couldn't even come on this forum much and read about ya'll's awesome exploits, mentally toast. Around August something clicked and started enjoying it again. I am so incredibly thankful to have improved health and to be able to ride again, main goals accomplished!

Agree with many others, bottom line is it's all about the smiles. I am a numbers geek though, so I have some stuff to throw out. Each ride I try to get at least 2 hours riding/moving time, schedule permitting, which I've hit almost exactly on average so far. That's been easy this year since I am so slow climbing. Fewer miles per ride but plenty of time out there, who wants to rush the enjoyment if you've got the time?:sneaky: My mid-week ride bud @sir crashalot has been great since he doesn't mind taking breaks and soaking in the scenery (letting me catch my breath), and sessioning the tech stuff as needed. We've had some 5+ hour elapsed rides that were priceless, though not huge in miles or elevation. And being downhill oriented, I like to track the elevation/mile, gotta go up to have steepish fun downs, even if a portion of the elev gain is HAB. Ave 140ft/mile this year, past high years were around 160 and low years around 135, so I feel good about not shying away from the steeper up stuff.

Enough rambling, happy riding everyone, my motto, go with what makes you smile, from no stats to full on power meters, it's all good as long as you're getting out there and enjoying it

This year’s goal was 328,084 feet (100,000 meters) of climbing. I was way ahead of my goal in August when I broke my collar bone and had to take a 3 month “rest”. Now I’m at 225,978 feet, which is almost 80,000 feet behind where I should be, and between being not nearly as fit as I was 3 months ago, and the weather, and “commitments” there is no way I’m going to get caught up. Perhaps I can get to 250,00 feet, but even that will be a stretch.

Now my goals are to ride as much as I can, have fun, and stay healthy (should have been my goals if the first place).

    2018 (so far)
    Distance 1,747.0 mi
    Time 230h 8m
    Elev Gain 225,978 ft
    Rides 116

More riding, more road trips, more hours/elevation/miles, more of the good none of the bad (that's my outlook and I'm not changing it....... for now).

I dunno - 6 runs total, riding up the hill for each doesn't really count as "bike park" in my book.

And really stoked on Dave's rekindled passion. Way to go mi amigo @knucklebuster!

Apparently I didn't ride as much as I had hoped to Thanksgiving week. Only 98 miles and 20k feet away from my recently set goals with 3 maybe 4 riding days left before the end of the year.
