The year's riding sure ended on a high note today. Two of my favorite trails with two of my favorite riders. Thanks for helping me meet my yearly goal, guys :thumbsup:

Thanks for the kind words, @herzalot :) I give big props to anyone who raises a family or other commitments and still crank on bikes. Guys like @rossage and his ilk may have an unfair advantage :sneaky:;)

:stop: Taking this moment to wish all Aye Empty Beers a safe and fun holiday and new year :geek::thumbsup:

Well... I ended 2017 the way I started it. With a plugged head and waiting for my ears to pop after coming down from Big Bear. @mtnbikej was more than patient when I pulled over repeatedly to hack up a lung and blow green goo. :gag:

Through some miracle, I PRed Motorway. It must be the Sudafed and Dayquil making me loopy, but I hung right on Jason's back wheel through the entire scree section, where he usually drops me. When we hit the hard left with the cairn collection, he shook me loose, but I held on to that point! I also slowed to a crawl for two different hikers, one of whom was a sweet little old Japanese lady who dove off the trail in fear, even though I was barely moving when I passed her. o_O  Crazy... Now I'm thinking what if I hadn't slowed down...

And this one put me over the 550,000 mark. It's just a number, but this fat guy couldn't do 1/20 of that 5 or 6 years ago. Bikes can be life savers!

    Happy New Year, You Hooligans!

No point in keeping track this year.. I sat most of it out due to a hip and shoulder injury back in early April. That crash could've been a deal breaker and I was ready to hang it up, but instead I've been easing back into it for the last couple months; trying to stay upright, get back in shape and have some fun. I seem to be going back to my roots, which could be a result of being on a 29er.. I'm liking fast, long-radius turns, maybe a holdover from my roadie/GS-type ski days. I may (not?) live to regret staying in the sport, but I've ridden my whole life, love my Ripley and honestly can't think of anything else I'd rather do.

    See ya in '18..

My 2017 is officially over with my commute home.

This has been an incredible year for me. I can't begin to explain how great 2017 was for me, in cycling.

How does that freaking awesome mileage compare to your past years? Just curious... Steady upward trend? Spike? Going for more next year?

    2017: 945 hours
    2016: 824 hours
    2015: 743 hours
    2014: 545 hours
    2013: 218 hours

Hard to compare miles due to my early years of running and swimming. I started using Strava I think in late 2013, some of my early activities sync'ed from other platforms I was using before that, but not all. But I think the ramp up is pretty indicative. I started running (or more like waddling) in 2009 with 50+ extra pounds. I didn't really ride much at all until late 2012 after doing my first sprint tri on an old 26" rigid Raleigh 18s MTB. I picked up an old, low end TT bike after that (which I still race). Did my first 70.3 (currently only) in November 2013. First (currently only) 140.6 in November 2014. I started riding MTB in 2015, after I raced the November 12 hours of Temecula on a borrowed 40 pound, 26" HT in 2014.

12,000 miles was a target, but not a goal. If I hit it, cool. If I didn't, eh, no big deal. My goal was to feel like I worked my ass off every week, and to love doing it. I did pretty good in 2017 with those goals. I enjoyed most of my time, and mostly felt like I worked my ass off. I will be trying for more next year, but not leaps and bounds, just a small percentage as I want to add running and swimming again, without sacrificing too much cycling.

2018 goal: Enjoy it as much as 2017!

Yep, about 4000 miles, or 300 hours, worth (roughly). Though that is far less then the year span between summer 2014 and summer 2015 when I started out commuting 40-50 miles a day as opposed to my 17 miles now.

    2017 was awesome!
in 2018 I'll be turning 50 (9/30)....... hopefully. Looking forward to it.
The only real goal I had for the last few years is 365 hrs of activity per year. I haven't made it yet. Maybe next year.

Now that 2018 started I don't even know how to check the Strava totals for last year.
Here are my stats (from memory):
    320 hours.
    310K elevation.
4350 miles (many of them on my road bike)

My goal for 2018: More memorable moments (on and off the bike).

I don't think you can see previous years with the app..i can't find it in my phone.

But on my desktop at home it's under the profile. There's a dropdown in the year and you can pick which year you want to see stats on. It may require Premium, don't know.

Many of you may know this already, but for those who don't, here's how you get to it on the desktop:

First go to the upper right on your Strava screen and select the "My Profile" option from the dropdown on your avatar (the circled part).

    upload_2018-1-5_19-1-41.png

Then you'll see this on the right toward the bottom right. Pick the year you want from the list.

So at this point I'm a couple hundred feet shy of last year's climbing total. I've set a goal for this year 25,000 feet higher (total of 225,000 feet of gain). Time to recap 2018, folks!!

Well, when you hit 5000' + of climbing every time you ride your bike, and you ride 3-4 times per week, you may be indicating otherwise.
