I watched the live stream of the hikers being plucked out a few hours ago, and I thought it was the section of Main Divide just above the Wall... About the spot where we took the picture with @UPSed .

Man, it's painful watching your favorite local trails get taken out. But it is the process, and it's overdue.

Events like this sure make you 1) glad you sessioned the F out of the goods, or 2) make you want to start. Ride everything, do it now.

I wonder if there would've been a different response had this happened on a weekend? Even with the heat, it's amazing to me there weren't more people in that canyon. So that's one positive. Another is the fire hazard going forward is reduced.

One negative is the possible length of a closure, as @sir crashalot mentions. One year? Two years? I've been in burn areas a number of times and think it's fascinating to see the power of nature, both of fire and with regeneration. To me, it's unfortunate when the general public isn't allowed to see this process.

And @rossage, as for rebuilding the trails.. Trabuco trail is awesome the way it is, from the Main Divide to the lower trailhead at the end of Trabuco Creek Road. But West Horsethief, above the Trabuco fork, could be re-assessed and possibly rebuilt at a lower gradient. In my understanding, it was built before mountain bikes were around, as a shortcut for hikers to get to East Horsethief. I think it'd be great if it were rideable from both directions, like Holy Jim.

    Joanna Hubble update:

There was no fire in Holy Jim Canyon - only in Upper Trabuco. Water and retardant is still being dropped as the fire heads east. Upper Trabuco is in cleanup phase, but OCFA and USFS are continuing to battle the blaze up the main divide. There have been some structures lost.

Call center lines have been reopened (951) 736-1811 and an Inciweb account has been established for this incident. #HolyFire

Updates will continue to be posted as they become available:

We had this happen to our trails a few yrs ago..it was awful, the fire burned right up to our property line(thankfully we had just cleared the brush) Our section of SOT was closed for a few yrs, it literally made me cry when I saw it...BUT the trail is restored now and looking pretty good. Like so many others have mentioned...it’s just something that has to happen. But I still feel for you as it’s saddening and looks apocalyptic, I hope in time it will be restored:thumbsup:

There's a pretty good map of it on Twitter. If it's accurate, the thing went wall to wall, from nearly the bottom to slightly over the North Main Divide in places.

It appears that one of the cabins in Trabuco Canyon burned. if that is the case there is the possibility that the fire started in one of the cabins, since the cabins are all downhill and downwind of the path of the fire.

Thanks for the update. So if the south end of the fire-upper trabuco-is in cleanup phase, hopefully that means it wont take out los pinos, chiquito, and san juan too.

RE: Trail Closures after the fire....

I don't know all the reasons they come up with for keeping a trail closed vs getting them open but I'm sure it depends on the soil composition, how fast the fire burned and many other factors. I know after last years fire at San Clemente Singletracks, we were riding there 4 days later and I dare say...the riding was actually better (maybe it just seemed that way because it was different and new) except for the lazy idiots cutting corners. While the Forest Service kept Idyllwild closed for years, they did just the opposite in a burn area in Colorado a few years back at Buffalo Creek. They publicly encouraged people to get out and ride after several weeks to "burn in" the trails. Maybe it's a crapshoot or maybe it depends on who is making the decision for a particular area?

Some is a safety issue.....Maple Springs stayed closed for a full wet season cycle, which stretched into 2 seasons since the first once was dry. They did have a few significant debris flows in the burn area.

The other issue is keeping people out of the physical burn area. People are curious....this with no brush to keep them out of an area, they will just help themselves in there....saw/see a lot of this in Santiago Oaks after the Canyon 2 Fire.

Clearly from the time lapse video supplied by @Redman, the fire started down low in the canyon.

Yeah, but that could be some careless schmuck in his 4x4 wheeling in the canyon.

Could be someone carelessly tossing a cigarette. It’s so dry back there it’s not gonna take much.

The Silverado Fire a few years back was caused by a concentrated reflection from galvanized sheet on a fence or building.

On some Mondays, I venture into the Santa Anas. Often I see rabbits, deers, etc .. Rarely do I actually see people...
It would be normal to do the full holy jim Trabuco loop and not see a single person..
I hope that the guy that provides the water at the holy jim creek/trail head's house was not the one that burned...
