I charge my phone while riding sometimes. I did it a lot, actually, because the battery life became so poor I could not track a half-day ride on a full charge. I used a small remote battery and a normal charge cord, and put them both in a pack or pocket to juice up.

I should have known that, with a normal charge cord, a lot of leverage is pried upon the Lightning connector, and that leverage could eventually be problematic. I had to ditch that phone because of, mainly, the loosened Lightning connector. (Glad that the more econo SE was just released.)

    In hindsight I could have:
    • Used my mount and top tube bag more
    • Used a cord with a 90° or 180° Lightning connector (a "gaming" cord)

I'm deploying option #2 for my new phone. I did not even know these styles style of cord existed. Perfect for my reckless on-the-go recharging scenarios. These angled cords won't work with my cradle-style mount, which has a simple hole for the charge port. So if I want to charge with the phone both mounted and in a pocket (read: bikepacking) I'll have to bring one straight and one angled cord.

On the AZT my charge cord stopped working, and I was relieved that I was able to replace it in Tusayan (south of Grand Canyon). So, a backup cord is what my new system will provide, along with, hopefully, getting more life from my phone.

FWIW! Minutia – it's what's for dinner. :geek:

I just replaced my 4 year old Iphone for the same reason....the charging port got damaged, so getting it to charge was nearly impossible. You can get it replaced, it's only a $15 part....but a lot of labor. I'll probably get mine repaired when things open back up.

Good to know. My old one is now a MP3 player...

Another solution would have been a wireless remote battery. The phone has to be touching the battery surface, so it’s not quite as cool as it sounds. Even the cheap new iPhone is wireless-charging compatible. At least use wireless charging at home to save wear and tear on the Lightning port? It’s obviously not as robust as USB, etc. The home charging pad is like forty bucks.

My personal phone is a 6 or 7-year-old iPhone 6. very few issues.
Work cell is an iPhone X, I've been through 3 since July.
I had similar issues with Macs, the first one lasted 10 years, the last one went almost 18 months. That's why I gave-up on those.

Yep, the 6 is tough...wife’s is still cranking.

Ten-year-old computer? For vid games or historic purposes? :p:stop: JK, but I don’t feel right with less than the same level SW as everyone I work with. Otherwise I’d still be rocking a IIci.:D

This thread could grow legs, whatwithall the OS passion we got here... :ninja:

That first Powerbook of mine was a workhorse. I got through my film school with it.

I just hate all tech now. Nothing lasts longer than three years and then there's the guilt of tossing it. Well, DSLRs still last a long time. My kid's still using my old D70

Yes, the Powerbook...RIP 17"! Every four years now. Doesn't the trade-in $ ease your mind any? I got $880 for my last Macbook.

But yes, I'll take a hammer and piton given the choice. Bike tools when necessary.
