Just a joke, I haven't bought it yet. I'll probably buy an Eagle GX groupset later in the year.

10-4, got it! I have a 110BCD road crankset, and it only goes to a 34T chainring, which is just a bit too big. To go to a smaller ring, looks like I'll need a mountain crankset. Then I can get a 30T on there which is what I think I want/need. My life is so complicated...

Look at CX cranksets. I put a FSA Adventure crankset with 30/46 gearing on the grinder and it's about perfect. The 30 works great in the hills and the 46 is plenty for the flat fire roads or pavement.

Good call, Paul. Although for me a 46T is waaaay too big, as I have a 10-42 cassette. Kinda' looking at a FSA Comet with a 38/28 double on it. But I wouldn't mind forsaking some top end and going with a 30T single.

Know any road/cross cranks that are Cinch mount? I only see wider 73mm BB ones.

They all will fit a 68 with spacers, but they MTB (73) cranks tend to splay out a lot wider to fit MTB stays. If there are any that are designed to work on narrower road bikes, it would be a better out of the box. But I'm zeroing in on some RF cinchers of some sort...

    Now take the IMBA survey!

Take a look at the SRAM Rival 1 cranksets. There's a spider, but it's removable. I'm assuming that it uses the same connection as their single mountain chainrings, but you should confirm with them.

    A LOT wider? It's a 5mm difference. 0.5cm. Even if that's all added to the drive side it's 1/5 inch. !!

That's like the marketers touting 12/148 boost as being substantially stiffer than 12/142.

I haven't noticed enough difference to matter.

It's not just the 5mm in the bottom bracket, but usually MTB cranks splay out at larger angles to clear wider stays. Road cranks tend to be more parallel and have a lower Q-factor. SRAM doesn't publish the Q-factor, so I'm just presuming that their road cranks are narrower. They could just be re-labeled MTB cranks.

@Runs with Scissors hopefully last post on crank width/Q/Footprint/whatever, as this is the IMBA thread, right!!! But the RF Aeffect cranks were 180mm wide, and the SRAM Rival ones are 150mm. So 30mm/3cm difference. Maybe that doesn't matter, plenty of people would argue either way, but I think it does. I'm going to be getting a 30T SRAM cog, that as @pperrelle pointed out should go right on.

Whatever works!!! I was just noting that I use the RF Cinch 73mm on the Kona, and it works great for me. Yeah, a tad wider than a road bike but I ride both so it's not a big deal to me.

And actually, all I saw on the link was Univ of Ohio, nothing to do with IMBA that I could see. So there's that. o_O

They don't endorse it's use in designated wilderness areas.
