Okay, bored outa my skull, thought I'd start a Wayback Machine thread. Pics from when you first started mtb-ing, the more day-glo the better. My contribution: a 1987 bikepack trip around the White Rim Trail, Canyonlands NP, Utah. Panniers were a thing! Lightweight tents, not so much.

I must have been bike-packing based on the stuff tied to my bike and around my waist!
Wait - who stole my chainstays?

That's an Alpinestars Al-Mega DX with Shimano DX Drivetrain, Panaracer Smoke/Dart tires, a Ringle front hub with titanium skewer, Rock Shox Mag 20 fork, Shimano SPD pedals and Scott Comp SPD shoes. Ensemble brought to you by Performance including shorts, glasses, half gloves and purple jersey tied to stem. Oh yeah - the stem and handlebar were one piece. ControlStix bar ends. Let's not forget the ProTec Styrofoam helmet! The red water bottle was well-earned at a NORBA race in 1992 at Winter Park. I raced beginner class and finished somewhere near DFL.

The effective chainstay length on that bike was 15.75"!

Pink Panther dust does a number on the peepers. Like I need to tell you...

@Walleye, great thread idea! That's some choice vintage stuff you put up. Panniers are still a thing if you ask me. I would not hesitate to rack em up on a hardtail. You were ahead of the curve with that fat all-around compression strap, looks perfect.

I have unscanned prints from a road tour I did in '83, but a conspicuous gap after that until this century.
