Trying to get a few miles in wherever I can... Going to be off the bike most of the upcoming week, and I am woefully unprepared for Temecula on the 30th.

After not riding last night, I got out today.

Felt pretty good being back on the correct bike.

Was a little overdressed....expected it to be colder....perhaps it would have cooled down had I made it closer to dark.

Coming down Hawk on a slow speed pick a line, I picked a line and turned the wheel....heard what sounded like toothpicks snapping. Continued on to the bottom and that is when I noticed this:

Destroyed the tired....rim is perfectly true. Called it a day and headed home. The front wheel was all over the place.

Otherwise I got my normal Thursday evening numbers in.

Did a quick STT-Luge ride last night after work. Was a little chilly at the start but warmed up nicely slogging up Modjeska Grade!

Took the newly converted 1X out for its maiden voyage today. Met up with Faust29 at the christmas tree lot and we rode up to the golf ball and back. Completely counter-intuitive and makes no sense, but the climb felt easier. I only got one PR, but I wasn't shooting for any.

My impressions from this one ride - admittedly one of the easier climbs out there - is that I like this setup: 34 chainring with an 11-36 cassette. Got to the top feeling good, didn't have to make any stops along the way. We stopped at Beek's for the requisite bike pic:

    20160115_101050.jpg

Felt pretty good, and Steve agreed we should head up to the golf ball - and him on a single speed! He left me in the dust; it was not a fast climb for me, but very doable.

    20160115_102228.jpg

Headed back down, but my skinny tires kept me from going too fast. This was a fun ride and good start with the 1X. I think either Harding or Monroe is next.:)

EDIT: Stats - for those from another planet who have not seen a golf ball RR before, 18.7 miles and 2,543 feet of gain.:geek:

Got a small ride in today. My plan was to ride over to JRA and check out the new DEFCON 2.20160115_111522-1.jpgI had to abort due to a heavy drizzle. The spin felt good so I'm hoping to have a great ride tomorrow. Screenshot_2016-01-15-12-23-05-1.png

Good ride... But it was certainly damp and chilly at the golf ball! I was going to suggest going on to Hagador, but it was completely covered in clouds, and looked even colder. :stop:

The 22 tooth in the rear made the climb a lot more enjoyable than the 20 tooth...

Riding the Salsa in 1/2 fat mode seems to be the best of both worlds. There doesn't seem to be much of a penalty climbing, and the wide tire makes coming down a lot more controlled.

Maybe I missed it, but that's a 29er rear with a 2.3ish tire and the 27.5 front 2.8 WTB? Must be pretty close to the same diameter.... Interesting....

There were some guys on MTBR who could get a fat tire up front, but didn't have the room in back, so they rode 1/2 fat. I thought I'd give it a try, and it really is a decent setup. The Velocity Blunt wheel with the 2.8 Trailblazer is almost the same height as the 29er, but at 15-17 PSI with a really high sidewall, it's a completely different ride. If I want to go fatter than that, I'd have to put the rigid fork on... Like @bigringrider101 who has a 3.25 up front and the 2.8 in back.

I have the rear wheel with a 2.8, but that is a lot harder to push uphill...

When I was waiting for my B+ wheelset, I had to borrow the rear wheel from Mrs Jones. Hugo's wheel 50mm wide with a 2.4 Ardent and it fit El Mari.

I went out today.....showed some of the guys a version of the San Gabes ride we did a few weeks ago.

Big difference was that we climbed up Mt Lowe Mtwy all the way to Inspiration point. I didn't realize that so much of it was paved. Good news is that Middle Merril didn't seem as chunky this time around. Sunset and El Prieto were great. Only saw a couple of riders out.

Tons of hikers out there today. Super nice temps along the way.

Quick spin today... got out really late because I was really lazy in the a.m. Can't have it both ways!
Rode my SSCX bike, and DAMN was that hard. My first ride on it in a long time, since before I had the flu over the holidays. Managed the whole ride in a 40X18T combo, but it was painful and slow! A great couple of hours at the end of it though!!!

    A milestone for me.

Danimal, a friend named Jeff and I set out for a routine Whiting-Luge-Whiting run with possible extra credit above Luge. Awesome weather. Everything was sooo green too. Jeff bailed out at The Luge, and Dan and I proceeded up to a point we refer to as CTA - a saddle overlooking the Joplin facility and the Trabuco wash. That adds a nice 700 ft. and brings the ride total over 3000' of climbing. Kioti has been very busy making our lives more fun. He did a ton of work on the first 2 miles past the Luge, including the formerly tricky, steep sharp curve (left turn climbing). I think I'll set up a Kioti Appreciation Fund and get him a big, fat gift. That dude has done so much for the riders of OC. Way to go Jim Jennings - you are my hero!!!!

Dan and I both had great runs down The Luge and finished strong on the icing on the cake that is Whiting.

My milestone was - this is the first time since 2008 that I was able to ride over 3000' of climbing without cramping. Yay me. Actually, I had quite a bit left in the tank and just ripped the last couple of miles in Whiting. Watch out J, Steve, Mike, Rossage and Mikie, with those kind of numbers, I am gunning you guys down next!

When I got home, my daughter was tending to my wife who has a bad cold. But, she asked "Hey Dad, can we go ride bikes?" I said "Sure, do you want to ride around here or go try out your new bike on the trail?" She said, "Let's go to Aliso." Best...moment....ever! Well, OK, not ever - but how cool!

Bikes are fun! That is all. Oh - and thanks Dan! (And Jeff)

As usual, didn't feel like driving so I left from the house and headed out with no destination in mind. Went east and started to think Chino or Weir/ Oaks. But then out of the gloom I saw Sierra Peak staring at me. Why not, haven't been up Coal Cyn in years and in fact never made it to the top. With the recent rains the dirt was perfect (no sand). It's a bit of a distance for me. 19 mile flat warm up then a 2500' climb. The climb was nice no issues. Gloomy weather kept it cool. Yay, the peak! The descent was a blast. Letting go of the brakes for long periods of time and accelerating like crazy. Strava says 57.3 mi.h, but don't believe it for a second, I was way faster than that :whistling:. Then a 19 mile cool down but what the heck, I'm pedaling.:)

Actually, part of my recent uptick in motivation to get in some longer rides is for precisely that reason. I don't want to show up to a 4000' ride with 2000' legs.
