Exploration Trail up and back this morning. Man that trail is a hoot. The heavy winter made it a bit more challenging in spots, which isn't a bad thing imo. Keeps you on your toes going from fast flowy to punchy little step up climbs then boulder rolls, drops, roots, and some exposure, with some altitude thrown in just to keep me sucking for more O2. Going up the trail is tough, getting on and off the bike gets old after awhile.

I forgot my camelback at home, so was without tools, flat repair/tubes, air pump, reverb e-clamp, etc (but I did have zip ties). I was scared, just knew something was gonna happen and I wouldn't be prepared and have to walk out or worse, pedal out with the dropper stuck down, but thankfully it didn't.

At the upper trailhead after the 4.5 mile climb, around 1700 feet gain and tops out around 7300 elevation.

Fast line coming down is over that stump to the right of the bike. No I didn't, due to no spare tube or flat repair (as far as ya know) :D

Where the trail crosses this drainage... it's more bumpy than last year

My bugnet was in the left behind camelback. I've been using these wicking neck gaiters for sun protection (thanks @mike for the idea) and they do ok in a pinch at keeping the bugs out of nose and lungs. Very stealthy too, ride it like you stole it :)

Going up exploration, is a totally different ride. A lot of fun climbing it, but it takes a lot of time for me to commit to that.

Agree, the climb took me an hour and 45 today. Did stop more often to take pics, and because I had no camelback, stops to get drinks from the water bottle out of the backpack. Could probably do the pavement climb in half that, but it's pavement. I will say going up the trail has lots of opportunities to practice your tech climbing, which I like, even if I have to keep stopping for air and to slow my heart down. Can also scope the lines for coming down. Anyway, just have to have plenty of time and not be in a rush to get to the top. I heard there is an alternate climbing trail off yellow post site 6, that skirts through Snow Valley, but I've never done it.

The 4.5 miles of prime mostly-downhill is fine, if you can do it 2 or 3 times, which for me means shuttle or pedaling pavement multiple times (meh). If I climb the trail, I'm pretty worn out after one lap.

No thread is complete without a derail. I click on the location in your description and it takes me to a lumber yard in Rim Forest :)

Haha, I do seem to spend a lot of time at Rimforest Lumber :) Just didn't want to put the exact coordinates of our cabin on there, it's on the north side of Rimforest, walking distance to the lumberyard...

Does anyone know how to access this alternate trail? Does it go to the top, and is it much easier than climbing Exploration? I climbed Explo once and it wore me out. I want to have energy left for SkyPark after Exploration, so figured I would just ride up the road ... but I would prefer dirt.

This is someone else's route map, I've never tried it.
When we hiked the Children's Forest paths last weekend we got close to the lake/reservoir. It appeared to have a 10ft fence all the way around it, and it had been breached and patched in a few spots. Not sure if that hinders this trail's access.

As I was getting ready to set out, @He&Shewhodonotpostonforums, returned from their ride. Jeremy had several bloody scrape marks on his shin.
Temps not bad, warm going up and cool on way back down.

Saw no one on the trail. Very light traffic at Rocky’s. I remember that day well because that was the last time I purchased safety gear for riding, and it’s gotten kinda stale...but it still works!

I actually rode my bike today...
Last time was Sunday with Mrs. imtbtrails.

@SS Barby said he was willing to drive out and do Golden Eagle with me after work. So after work we buzzed out there and rode the whole thing! Started around 5:30 and was done around 8:00 something. I don’t know cuzz it looks like my new Garmin came off the bike mount on the way home from a ride last week... yeah this been a tough week and a half.

But I rode my bike!

We started with grand plans to head to Sierra Peak... But, that was not to be. It was hot. Blecchhhh... :gag:

Mr. Luge KOM caught us in Hidden Ranch, and we chatted for a bit. Well, I managed to chat only for a few seconds, while @mtnbikej doubled his velocity and hung on to TB's wheel most of the way to the top. I happily fell off the back. :p

It's going to be a really long summer between the heat and my limited riding options... I miss the snow. :p

Weds intended Sierra Peak out and back turned into a Beeks’ out and back.

Felt ok at the start. Temps were warm but not bad. That didn’t last long. Before Hidden Ranch it was showing over 90* with no breeze and no shade.

Our pace was a little quicker than I think either of us intended.

Yeah, TB caught us just before the bottom of Booby Trap. As it happens, socializing increased the pace. My legs were screaming.

Last 2 turns before Beeks’ got stung by a bee. Struggled up to the gate. I had nothing left. Got bit by 2 flies standing there.

Called it at that point. Even the run back down wasn’t quick.

    Woof.
