I've done more than my share of rides in rain / snow / freezing temps. Still fun once in a while, but when you are able to ride where conditions are prime why wouldn't you?

We're easily amused by a little snow and flowing water here in the OC! :p :D

    Ride Report Part Two:
Continuing with the clothing theme, since the forecast was for wind chill in the teens at Santiago Peak, thought it would be a good day to put the inclement weather kit to a test so I came fully equipped. On upper body was wearing 5 layers of quick drying and vented polyester and a 3 layer Gore tex hooded shell with pit zips. In my backpack I also had a second pair of thick wool socks, a water repellent-down jacket and Outdoor Research Alti gloves in a 2 gallon Ziploc baggie. It didn't get that cold and I didn't go up to the peak. No need for the heavy duty stuff. What I was wearing worked very well. At one point I was soaked but never felt cold and when I dried up I never over heated.
From the start it was raining. When I got to the first guardrails hail was in the mix. At 3700 ft. a mix of rain and snow. At 4000ft. it was pure snow falling up to 4 Corners and also on the Upper Harding waterfall segment. the Main Divide to Motorway segment had snow on the ground for the first 1 1/2 miles. That six mile ride was rocky and rutted but the addition of hero dirt made it lots of fun. Finally I got to Motorway. Though it was roughed up a bit here and there, it was permeated with superb quality magic dirt. The fun and flow was off the charts. :):):thumbsup:

I stopped and got tacos on the way home last night. The girl behind the counter thought I was nuts, because my teeth were chattering when I was trying to order! :p

Midweek out-and-back on Harding. Originally intended to ride to the Modjeska radar towers, but I wasn't prepared for how cold it was going to be during the middle of the day. Full winter bike jacket, long-sleeved jersey, full-fingered gloves, and things still got really cold on any kind of downhill. Climbing I was ok... but the downs froze me. 51 at the parking lot, and dropped quickly into the 40's. Hit the 30's at about mile 6. Ice on the puddles starting at 3 miles - and solid ice at 4 miles.

Harding is really wet - and the bottom mile has a much higher number of mud puddles than I recall ever seeing due to the bulldozer "repairs" from last year. From 2 to 3 miles there are creeks on/across the trail. Just a cold slog today.

rode today  or really this evening. I was on the street but when I got to Ventu Park a big group came down and crossed the big street. I looked at the trail heads as I passed and they were all bleeding H2O. I am sure they scared the trail, but knowing the rolling friction was high & that made me feel good about being on the street vs the Space Mtn-Rosewood loop. It was 54 when I started so I wore lots of layers. I did not get too cold.
    Happy its getting cold trails

Between @Cisco Roots and @evdog , we have the extremes covered!!!

Me, I tried to keep it right in the middle: Ten miles @ Oakmont. I'm officially not following the kids anymore, as they leave me in the dust. So I just wandered around and loved every bit of it. Trails are great after all the rain... they're built by Bellfree and you get what you pay for!

I couldn't get a good photo of Mt. San Bernardino... I have never seen it so majestic! The top quarter is totally white! Gorgonio and Jacinto aren't too shabby though!

There is a better than zero chance ours will never leave!

Didn't take a lot of photos on the ride. Here are just a couple:

I was the first tracks up the trail since before the last rain.

First ride since MTT over a week ago (for shame!!!). I rode over to Cherry to check out the conditions. Not great. Serious rutting keeps you on your toes through what is usually care-free smooth XC trails. There is a few deep mud sections, one slide that needs to be repaired, and draining water all over the place. Back to fire roads for the time being when spinning from home. It's all good to me.

    9.29 miles
    1404' gain

Feels wonderful to be loose from the work out. :)

Rode this morning in the frost and there were springs bubbling out in the middle of some of the trails. Awesome day. Saturate before using.

Thursday Social fizzled... So @mtnbikej and I went to play in the snow again. All of the flowing water we saw the other night on the upper half of Maple Springs was now frozen solid... I spun the wheel a few times.

Main Divide up to Modjeska was pretty awesome... 30s most of the way up, and upper 20s from Four Corners up to Modjeska. Thankfully the wind wasn't blowing as hard as the other night. We ventured a little ways past Modjeska into the saddle, but there wasn't as much snow in that section...

Bundled up to come back down...

I had the 3.0 Trailblazer on the front, and the 2.8 Ikon on the back... Fun to come off the mountain, not so much fun at times getting them to the top.

    19 miles and 3300 feet...

Yeah, for some reason, our normal Thursday Social group didn't want to play in the cold.

Well it was warmer than Tuesday night....sort of. I was able to go with short sleeves all the way to when we turned around.

Yep, the paved section of Maple Springs was dry and the water crossings were much lower. The first mile or 2 into the dirt, my legs still hadn't shown up.

At 3000' we started encountering ice.

We rolled through 4 Corners and continued on to Modjeska Peak. We found lots of snow.....this is what I was looking for the other night.

Bundled up and headed back down. Much more comfortable with warmer'ish temps. Saw a nice sized bobcat on the way down.

    Great night on the mountain.
