Installed a dropper post on the hardtail yesterday. Thought I'd be able to test it out today. Big mistake. 100 yds in and I was barely able to walk out with the mud piling up under the fork arch. At least I got to spend an hour cleaning the bike when I finally made it home. That was the point that I remembered the new dropper. Well it goes up and down smoothly in the driveway.

Afternoon spin up Loch Leven. Hoping to find some accumulated snow, but no luck. Just about killed me! Haven't been on a bike for over a week, and wow fitness depletes quickly! Strangely enough, I got a ton of PRs on the climb. But the last bit... just trying to get to the gate was all I could do! Went up with the idea of hitting the short version of the PO Loop, but not even close. Luckily a pile of dirty snow there I could take a picture of!

    Mission accomplished:

DG surface was moist but not muddy... perfect out there!

We rode today... The Three Stooges (@mtnbikej , @TheProfessor, and I) did Harding to Motorway. Harding has a lot of rockfall. A lot. It's all passable, but it does suck a little more energy than normal. We saw a few waterfalls up higher. Very cool.

We were checking out the first one when a forum lurker happened by... I won't call him out, but maybe he'll pop in on his own one day.

At Four Corners we watched the lawlessness down below on Maple Springs. It confirms that people will not behave in the absence of supervision... I'll avoid that climb on the weekends until the rangers are back on duty, and the gate is closed in bad weather.

Main Divide had a few muddy patches, but overall if wasn't bad...

Motorway was Motorway... Fun as always. :inlove: No PR runs today with the hikers on the lower sections. Also a few other riders headed down. They were all friendly...

Back at the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary, we chatted with the volunteers for a bit, and enjoyed a soda.

I need to hit that route. Not much harder than MS - Motorway. Well, unless it's at your pace.

New dirt for Vince and I. Hero dirt after the recent rain. New views too. We rode up and down way over there. Steep climb, killer descent on sweet single track.

It must be National Mountain Biking Day.

Crowds like I have never seen before. Is there really that many riders in So Cal?

Hit San Juan today with a buddy. Perfect weather and dirt. Totally different than a few weeks ago when we passed about 50 riders on our way down. Only passed around 10 today.

Empty lot at 6:45 today. It was packed when we pulled in a couple of weeks ago.

That’s odd, I fully expected that lot to be completely full today, given that OC Parks are still closed. Guess everyone went to Luge

Back to back days with a Harding climb... As nobody else was willing to separate themselves from their pillow, it was just @mtnbikej and I. We talked about where to head when we hit Four Corners. Yesterday it was the big loop and we headed to Motorway. We discussed that, and Joplin, and just an out and back... We settled on some extra credit to Modjeska and then back down. First time seeing it since the day before the fire. It was a little surreal...

    My house is down there...
    IMG_0987.jpg

It was jump practice coming down Harding today... I don't care what you say about fire roads. A 30+ minute descent with a couple dozen water bars to launch off. That's too fun... And with all the rockfall, it was even better...

Near the bottom, we took the nature trail down to the creek... I've never seen a no-bikes sign and I believe it's legal. We rode as far as we could along the creek before the trail turned decidedly unfriendly. I need to go back and hike it one of these days...

This dog was having a lot more fun that the one we saw being carried... He trounced through the water a few seconds after the photo.

On the way home from Harding today, I passed at least two dozen riders headed down the pavement back to Cooks and another couple dozen at the top of the hill. I'd say it was packed...

Today I had a hankering for hero dirt, even though had to be at work by 11. Up at 5 am at parking lot for San Juan loop trail/lower Chiquito by 630. The lot was filling up quickly with large groups of hikers. Uhoh... but seems they all went to the trail across the highway. I started with ccw sj loop (fun chunk) then rode/hiked up Chiquito until the first high point the turned around and descended. What a nice change from the rains, creeks were flowing and dirt was tacky, trail was in great shape. Only saw a few people on the trail, but back at car at 930 and lot was overflowing.

The trail up Harding canyon itself is one of the best hiking trails in OC. Lots of water crossings and bouldering, shady and forested, ends at a waterfall. Definitely not bike friendly

Thanks for the summary... It certainly looked worthwhile and there were some very happy hikers coming out. I'll need to put that on the list and head out there one day without the bike...

    Twofer today:

Round 1: early AM run to explo/Skypark...didn’t bring the plus tires this time cuz heard snow had all been washed away courtesy of the Pineapple Express. Not so true for Explo...lots of snow left, some pretty icy spots. Smashy tried hard, but non plus tires lose every time on that type of snow...still fun, but only about 1/2 up and back. 45 min at Skypark was perfect...all clear...one Arrow and 3 Jumpline today.

Round 2: took one of the 8y/o on the tow behind with the fat bike all around (almost) Oakmont Park...1.5 ish hrs. That one did me in almost...we had lots of fun though! Worth it.
