Got a late start in the saddle today. I wasn't actually sure that I wanted to ride, which is why I set off late. So, I hit it at 8am. Already warming up in the sun by then. La Tuna bound, I was. It was a sweat bath the entire climb. Legs were tired from yesterday's ride so I stopped a few times to smell the roses. Plenty of folks out today enjoying the wilds. The plunge down Whiting Woods on the way back home is always a pleasure.

I casually mentioned last night that I was gonna go. Only 13 miles tho. Nice squiggly singletracks out there.

    Warning: Derail ahead>>o_O

A long time ago; in a reality far, far away (from my house anyway).. I rode the PAVED La Tuna Canyon with a dude who was destined to become my best friend on the road, skis, rock climbing.. He was a strong newbie, but I'd been at it longer. So we're on our first ride together and heading up La Tuna from the west, and he wants me to show him what I got (he'd seen slides of my European bike tour). I really don't want to, but he keeps insisting.. so I launch an attack and pin it to the underpass. Man did I pay for that for the next 20 or 30 years! I think the concept of "secret training missions" was born on that ride. :bang:

I am happy to report that the entire length of La Tuna Canyon Road has been restriped. It is now one lane each way which allows for a considerable safe zone near the shoulders for the roadies. Countless riders have been killed on that road by cars. I hope that this finally remedies the issue.

Wow, I hope so too! My buddy's been hit 3 times, but he still rides road. I let it go after shedding my denial. I miss it, but I love mountain biking. I've seen those dirt roads from the 210 and they look cool! Kinda snaky! ;)

There are little tidbits of ST that parallel the fire roads up there and or drop down the mountain, so it's not "all fire roads, all the time". Heck, there's even a Dowhiller's gapper jump course that follows Whiting Woods down. If you like flying 15-20' above the ground, the ramps on this course can get you there.

3 spd Townie laden with a 7'8" funboard and a backpack. Gotta stand if I wanna go up the hill! PS Townie's "Flat Foot Technology" does not make for friendly climbing, seated or standing.

80% of the bikes I encountered on the route were e-bikes. But for that application, I have no problem with that - surfing is the target sport, not cycling. E-bikes are good transportation.

Shuffled up to Donner Lake Rim Trails and were treated to some clean air, nice views and super fun ST dropping off the rim, right down to the lake on cruiser/twisty and then a lesser known chunkfest.

I pedaled my happy ass up to Old Camp today. Starting at the taco plaza, through Whiting via Borrego, mustard. Onto the scorching asphalt to get to STT gate. Up to and past the flag, creeping up to Old Camp. It was hot, I stopped several times at any shade I could find. It seemed like some 4x4’s tore up the trail from Cadillac up to the top of Old Camp. Broken brush and loose BIG rocks littered the trail. Even a sand rut in one of the corners. It definitely made that section of trail a lot more challenging and sucked life right out of me. Dropped down into Old Camp to enjoy the shade and solitude. Had a snack and back on trail for the fun downhill back to the flag. Had a real good run on the top of the Luge and meh on the bottom half. I got tired halfway down, through my purse over my shoulder and cruised the bottom half. Light speed down Live Oak to Cooks. Threw the horns at Sons of Anarchy as I blurred past Cooks onto Santiago Canyon for the slow painful grind on the hot lava asphalt back to Whiting back door entrance. Smooth runs down Catus, Santiago Ranch Whatever, Serrano, cow trail, too many names to remember. I made it back to my truck alive and not melting, 102 degrees. Wide open trails from the top of Old Camp ALL THE WAY back to the car. Not a soul to be seen. Just wish I had more energy left to push it a little. Still had a barrel of fun, 25 miles, 4000’, 2,589 drops of sweat,& 21,457.07 smiles. Riding bikes is fun! Being outdoors is cool! Go get some!

Nice one @Redman. Tough ride in the heat! Sounds like that section above Cadillac might've gotten torn up by the crew working on the poles. Not fun. But the descent sounds killer--all by yourself the whole way down?!? Don't see that much on a weekend, but I guess 100+ degree rides have their benefits!:thumbsup::cool:

I see what you did there....spinning/mashing/riding/surfing.....but was Ruby shedding the curls too... :)

The bushes on the side of STT above cadillac are flattened for sure. They've put a road to the top of a hills the never existed a few years ago.
If the guys working on the pole dis it that's ok. that's possible as aside from the bushes the trail was not abused when I road it 7 weeks ago.
OTOH, once someone goes you can expect every teenage boy with a 4x to go rip it up more.

I rode my bike yesterday and today.
Yesterday did luge whiting, 18.4 and 2800, and a butt load o' fun. Left at 7:30 and temps were great, couldn't ask for better.

As yesterday was the biggest ride in 6 weeks it tore me up. So today was a whiting loop from home 13.4 and 1800. Fun but much hotter as I left too late.
I've learned Sundays have much less traffic in Whiting than Saturdays.

    Bikes are fun! :)

That makes sense with the crews working. It was bad in a few sections, felt like my rear brake was dragging. Fun nonetheless.
