Last week at this time I was riding along the river in Eugene, dodging the homeless and meth heads... It was actually a little bit of surprise fun, because the water level was so low. I could play on the exposed rocks and get pretty far from shore, as well as quite a distance along the edge of the river.

Today... First ride since Cannell. And two shuttles in the last week! Time to get some miles and elevation without a van. Up Harding with the Chameleon still in "Cannell DH" mode. Mallet pedals and a Minion 2.5 moto tire on the front. Not exactly "cross country" rocket mode for a climb up Harding... :p There were a few hikers out today, and I stopped and chatted a couple times. Felt good at Four Corners, so I did the extra credit to "faux" Modjeska. The rock slides that we encountered a few weeks ago have been smoothed out somewhat, but I still didn't clean the climb up. Temps on Harding waffled from mid 60s in the sun to low 50s in the "Harding Soup" that was blowing across... I almost needed the windbreaker.

Only saw one other rider who passed by while I was taking the picture at Modjeska. No riders or hikers on the way down... Just me and the birds.

Um. 2 1/2 minutes faster coming down. Partly because of the bike, and partly because of the moto tire on the front...

    Into the cold Harding Soup

I was called out on this forum for only averaging 1000' vert on my typical rides and not near enough saddle hours on my quest for more watts/fitness.

    So today I did 11m/1500'
    Same last night.
And trying for 1800' before 9:00am tomorrow.

A Tuesday BS run with a couple of buddies. The temps sure have been nice lately. Somehow washed the front wheel out on the descent which ended up with a bit of road rash and a few dents on the helmet. Strange how a flat fire road can bite you sometimes.

Having been on a similar quest, my favorite Strava stats are total elevation for the year, average elevation gain per ride, and maybe most important: average gain per mile for the year.

Edit: If your feet/mile for the year is less than 100, you're a roadie. No denying it. :p

We headed out yesterday afternoon for a spin around Oaks/Weir Cyn on the Tandem.

Well, I put a smaller tire on the rear to stop the tire from rubbing the frame at bottom out. I put 35 psi in the rear tire(tubed) and thought it would be Ok. It wasn't. Rear squirmed all over the place. Stopped and pumped more air in it, but in didn't seem to make it any better.

Suz was concerned with us rolling the tire off the rim, so we altered the route and just went down Barham to Chutes then a loop around IRP.

I was descending B* for the first time in quite a while on Sunday and thinking how amazing it'd be if it had huge berms and walls! As it is, it's nicely graded for handling rain, but off-camber inside turns and outside corners with low unconsolidated berms keep the focus on traction. Purpose-built for fire prevention, I'd say.

Yep... @pperrelle - No shame there! I've slid through more of those turns than I care to admit. Including my Superman into the pile of freshly graded powder last year at 25 mph.

We got home and I put the gauge on the tire....28 psi. Tire felt like concrete. Gonna put 50 psi in and see how it goes. Yeah, Mobster.

Well I rode Harding on Sunday, and Blackstar today.

Tried to amp it up a little more on Blackstar. Made it to the upper gate in 1:06:13, which was about four minutes faster than my pace last week, but not fast enough for the 1:00 not-so-social rides.

Did some exploring north from Beek's. Rode through radar valley and climbed Skyline out of the valley until it started to drop away to the East. Since I didn't have time to do an out-and-back on Skyline, I turned around and headed back. Maybe next time I'll do the Blackstar/Motorway loop.

I just realized something depressing. Beek's is at 2800 feet elevation. If you are riding Maple Springs from the Tree Farm, 2800 feet elevation is almost exactly where the pavement ends and the dirt climbing begins

No it's not elevation GAIN it's elevation. Starting from the Tree Farm and going either way, the climb to Beek's is a little more elevation gain because you have the dip in Hidden Valley to contend with.

I just found it interesting that the place where the pavement ends on Maple Springs is exactly the same elevation as Beek's Place. Of course on Maple Springs you are still down in the bottom of a valley when that happens :)

Yes, but go mostly uphill from Beeks to Motorway, where as Maple to Motorway has more downhill.

Yeah I was looking at trail maps and trying to figure it out - why Four Corners is so much higher than Beek's. Beek's (to me) feels like it should be higher than it is.

Well, @Faust29, I'm not a toothpick either :notworthy:. That back tire was so wobbly, squishy, squirrely and down right uninspiring to the confidence. I turned into a total sissy lala at the thought of it rolling off the rim and causing us to crash. We haven't had any big oopsies on the tandem, and the longer I go without experiencing one, the better!

tree farm to Beeks via Bstar is a lot harder than tree farm to end of pavment via Maple springs... that's a roadie ride!!

Tree farm to Maple EOP is 8 miles and about 1,850 feet. Easier than going up B*. MS just feels worse because of the last 3 miles gaining 1,000 ft.

Another commute another flat tire. Getting pretty good at these Nascar pitstops. First one on Monday on the hardtail was totally my fault due to dried up Stan's. As documented earlier though today I commuted on "da blue bomber" so of course I took the "mo funner" route. Cant find a puncture and there was plenty of Stan's so I'm guessing this one burped since there was lots of dirt in the bead.

The pavement on Maple Springs kills me... 1000 feet in 3 miles and the last mile is the steepest! Even on a good day, it hurts.

We rode... @mtnbikej and I did the Wednesday evening ride. Started early enough to not need lights. Cool temps and high humidity for an out and back on STT to Old Camp. I thought the pace was a little fast on the dirt to the Luge... And it was! We didn't stop much, and before we knew it we were at Old Camp. I fell off the back a little on the last mile. It may be time to put Camille on a diet, as she's still in Cannell DH mode. Time to start thinking about the Wrightwood 50 setup... A Minion 2.5 on the front will not be part of the equation. :stop:

    Lots of spiders out tonight...
