We did the outer loop. Parked at McGhie's and rode out from there. The trail names I remember are, Viagra DH, Mustang, and Landmine.

scan and I were at that same spot (pic in your 1st post) later that afternoon. We did the 3 mile smile/Techno loop upon arrival and did Viagra, Mustang and Inner loop back to the Late Night trailhead. What did you think of the last half of Landmine?

Just got back from an STT/Luge loop. Excellent conditions this afternoon, not too damp.. a few puddles I rolled through just for fun. First time on Luge since the recent work, due to being sick. Mostly props but noticed a few drains bypassed (which could problematic if we get some big storms) and at least one or two sections maybe overly tamed for my taste. But certainly fun in my present condition. Tried unsuccessfully to emulate Bryn Atkinson's flowy style, but any similarities were no doubt only in my mind.

Landmine is hella rough. Only part of the trail that made me wish I had my FS bike with me.

I rode that with my wife back in December. The guy at McGhie's said it was a "beginner" trail. NOT! Would have been ok with just me but my wife had to walk a lot but did a great job riding whatever she could. Thought she was gonna kill me but she was forgiving!

I rode it with my GF. We've done it several times before. This is the first time she made it through without getting off the bike. Before she had to walk several parts of it.

Riding through there for the first can be pretty intimidating. All you see are rocks. A simple fall can land you in a world of hurt.o_O

Today was my first ride of the new year! Between work, weather, and sick friends I haven't had a chance to get out and spin the wheels since last Thursday, so I was determined to get out for at least a short ride today. Weather and conditions were perfect!

I've been mulling over the idea of building up a SS bike, so being foolish and feeling up to an extra challenge, I kept the gearing at 32/18 for the entire ride. I surprised myself by cleaning the entire ride without problem. I can definitely see a SS being added to the stable in the near future!

Early start before work ride in aliso today. Totw-MS-wood Canyon-5 oaks-cholla-totw. Parking was empty at 7 15 am, had ms all to myself. Best dirt there, so much traction. At 9 am the whole world arrived and I was reminded of why I am reluctant to ride on sundays. 20 guys at top of 5 O. Trailwork was being done halfway down involving pavers and berms. Didn't feel that great today the climb back just worked me. Huge groups of hikers and a zillion cars parked along Alta Laguna when I finished.

Finally got out to Oaks today after a little morning delay (I'm Gonna Ride Somewhere...)

My legs felt weak pedaling to the trail but once I hit dirt they were fairly warm and felt ok, it was my HR that gave me trouble early on. Once I started climbing up 3B's I knew it wouldn't be a long ride the way my heart was beating. Ended up with a max HR of 202 and an average of 178 for the ride.

Climbed B's to Yucca and went down there to Bumble Bee and up Goat. Headed down Cactus then up BB to B's and back up to Yucca for another DH of it. I actually started dealing a lot better but with my morning delay I decided to call it a day.

Dirt was excellent, weather was nice... fun ride!

11+ miles 1500+ feet and a whole lotta heartbeats..

Also saw some deer on BB:

What a great day to ride!

Met up with @Cougar and a friend from work (Jose) to do Whiting-Luge-Whiting and some extra credit. We saw no less than 5 Bambis in Whiting - one buck. A few two-legged deer too. Someone built a cool little kicker at the end of the first downhill turn on Cattle Pond. I didn't see it in time to "boost" it. Mustard was a little spongy in spots, but nothing stuck to the tires. I felt fairly strong, but not extraordinary.

On to the Modjeska climb. As I was standing and pedaling, it got a little steeper and I shifted into an easier gear. Sloppy shift made a crack sound, then my bike was creaking with every pedal stroke. Grrrrrrrr.... Climbed to STT with the annoying creak and then did a quick diagnostic. Hmmm..chain is still tracking accurately in cassette with no mystery shifts, so it's not a loose derailleur or d hanger. Checked all pivot bolts - all were tight. Grabbed derailleur and rotated it towards and away from the cassette and re-produced the sound. Hmmm. Craig loaned me some chain lube and I bathed the rear mech in lube. There - that fixed it right? Nope. Never could figure it out, but it sure was annoying. I decided that my bitching about it made it doubly annoying to my riding buddies, so I just shut up and dealt with it.

I had a strong climb to the top (pre-Luge), with Jose hot on my wheel. Once we regrouped we decided to go beyond the Luge up to the saddle above the Joplin Ranch - adding another 600' of climbing, and a fun little descent. I was strong on that climb too. Beautiful views from up there - everything was soooo green - all the way to the ocean.

Great run down the Luge. Some dude was taking photos on the straightaway with the double drop. Cool. Maybe it was for evidence that MtBers break the speed limit? I smiled and said hi! Jose and Craig also had nice runs on The Luge, although Jose said he was on the ragged edge most of the time. By his own admission, he's not much of a descender. He was stoked!

Then, a funny thing happened on the way back to Whiting. At Cooks we got enveloped by a Peleton of roadies wearing VeloViet jersies (and mostly speaking their native tongue). We just started riding normally, but I was feeling strong so I overtook a rider. Then another. Then a few more. I was not drafting, and I invited them to draft behind me (I'm a pretty big windbreaker). One or two were not pleased by me passing, so they quickly passed me back, only to fade and be overtaken 100 yards later - creaking derailleur and all. :whistling: Not gonna lie, I felt kinda smug. I continued a strong pace all the way to the Whiting gate. Yay me!

Oh and my new 5-10s were comfy and effective. I know you were worried. They use this new foot retention concept called Laterally Adjustable Closure and Exit System. Amazing technology!

Beautiful day, fun friends, strong legs. Bikes are fun - even if they creak mercilessly for no reason (thanks SRAM ).

20 miles. 3000' Wahoos for lunch - Jose picked up the tab. Thanks!

Haven't been riding much lately due to a cold/flu/cold:sick: Finally back on the bike and rode a 32/2800 Floop yesterday. Most of the Floop was dry enough to not even get dirty. Just a couple puddles that were easily avoidable. No route planned, just kept riding. Today I got together with Vince and @PATKOUG for a ride at one of my favorite places, Sycamore in Riverside:thumbsup:. Hero dirt everywhere but have to keep an eye out for deep ruts. Got stuck in two. One going down Rattlesnake and the other down Terry's Wall. No crashes though. Gorgeous day with perfect weather IMO. Again no route planned, just kept riding. Rocks, drops. rollers, small jumps, single track!!!! Vince digg'n his new I9's.

Well... I didn't chase down any roadies today, but I did have a little fun on the Bell Trail. I played leapfrog with a new mountain biker on his Tallboy. He was absolutely stoked to be out there, and was having a blast. I also ran into a young man on his new Diamondback who was exploring out there for the first time. He was also stoked... That's two days in a row that I've run into kids on bikes, new to the sport.

Then I got buzzed by the Specialized e-bike that emerged from a side trail out of Coto. As he flew past, he exclaimed loudly that he had no clue where he was. Well, at least he was getting there fast. o_O

    I was up there yesterday...

Met up with a friend for a Whiting, Old Camp, and Luge loop from Cook's Corner this morning. We managed to beat the worst of the crowds as we headed down through Whiting to start the ride, although we did come across a guy toward the end of Serrano walking his bike out with a taco'd front wheel and slightly bloodied face. :( He had a friend walking out with him and said he was okay, so we continued on.

After riding back up through Whiting, I ran into @herzalot and his group at the STT gate. Chatted with them for a minute before heading up to catch up to my friend. What a beautiful day to climb STT up to Old Camp! Clear skies, green hills, great views of the ocean, and perfect temps! Apparently, everyone was following us up to Old Camp because we must have passed 10 people in the first mile or so heading back down the trail. After that it was a fun fast descent the rest of the way back to Cook's. The Luge was amazing today! It felt like I was flying down it (by my standards:)) and I beat my old PR by 6 seconds.

Finished with 23 miles and 3,700' and one of the best rides I've had in a while. My friend has been wanting to make it up to Santiago Peak sometime, so I'm trying to take him on some longer rides with more climbing. He made it through this one without cramping and feeling pretty decent at the end. We may just go for it soon and try a Maple Springs to Joplin run.

Oh yeah and I saw @MattB today. I was flummoxed about my creaking derailleur so I fear I wasn't entirely present in the moment. All I know is they were on a mission. I appreciate you saying hi, Matt!

No worries! You seemed more focused on analyzing your friend's fashion choices than the creaking derailleur at the moment :D. It was great to run into you out there. I'll have to actually join a ride with you one of these days.

Beauty day. Was worried about crowds and mud, so the pedals started turning at 645 Peltzer w my buddy Vido. Up Maple to Four Corners. Met a guy on a speshy named Chris while climbing. Surf buddy Ralphie joined us at the gate. He lasted a mile. Good on him!

Caught breath at Four Corners, then descended to meet my later arriving friends. (Michael, Chad & Vido). Unfortunately I got all of the way to the pavement before running into my friends. Turned around and went back up to Four Corners. Hung with my buddy Michael on the second climb, just turned the pedals and motivated him. IMG_5359.JPG Over to Motorway and down. 38 miles. 5900 feet. Avg HR 159. 4:20 moving time.

Yup, I climbed Maple 4 times this week. :) Life is good.

Oh, I ran into @BonsaiNut at Four Corners.

I got out today. The plan was up Maple Springs from tree farm to 4C and down Harding, then through the canyon back to the truck.

I was feeling good all the way up MS. Nature has made the ride easier or I'm in better shape than last time...:whistling: Even got a few climbing PRs although I wasn't really trying to.

At 4C I looked at my elevation gain and figured I'd go a little farther. Got to Modjeska cutoff and decided I was too close to turn around now!

So I went for it...tagged Santiago Peak.

Nailed a bunch of PRs coming back down....I musta been in the groove.

What a beautiful day in the saddle.

    Butcha dint see mee!?!

I waited until 2:00 to ride up the STT because.. I was lazy? Then I rode out a couple miles and swung a pick and tossed some really sticky dirt for about 2.5 hours in a really big ditch. Goal? Who knows. Maybe save the trail through a few more storms?

Lots of afternoon riders out there, most said thanks, one offered to help (but it was pretty late) and then a fellow trail builder came by and helped me finish. Then he continued to the Luge and I hauled some packages and the mail down the STT. Almost ran over a couple hikers just before the end of the trail because it was 1. It was dark, 2. I was hauling ass. and 3. They were obscured by a bush. Gotta love those XT's/Minnion's. Apologized profusely, and proceeded to exfil location.

Nice change from being sick a few days ago! Trail fast; Ripley smooth.

Rode my bike this morning, probably.
I might have met up with @rossage at Switzers to ride Strawberry, not gonna admit it though. Oh and my perennial shadow Jose refused to stay home.
So there I was trying to zone out and tune out the perfect weather and the so-so views, while my riding "companions" droned on and on about this and that.
What-ever, leave me alone ok? Geez what does a guy have to do to ride in relative peace and quiet. Goodbye solitude.
7:30 freakin AM meet up time means it's still cold out, why me I ask to no one in particular. Ok, put my head down and start climbing, and climbing, and climbing. Up Josephine fire road to the upper saddle.

Why do we have to climb all the way up there??
    IMG_0226.JPG

Even the bikes got tired of climbing, they bucked us off and said "Screw it" we are laying down right HERE.
    IMG_0225.JPG

Where's the rain? The smog? I can see downtown L.A., Palos Verdes, and that cast off island Catalina. Geez it sooooo purdy....NOT
    IMG_0229.JPG

My bike was offering the last chance to just stop, lay down next to her and just stare up at the sky.
    IMG_0228.JPG

@rossage looked out at the city below and said, could you imagine looking out at the city and suddenly a mushroom shaped cloud suddenly appeared???
In a morbid sense, I felt that was pretty funny. So this cartoon is for you, you sick puppy:

    15285026_1207047259372772_783436529335990046_n.jpg

Oh the rest of the ride was "Fun" and the company was tolerable.

15.5 or so miles, probably 2700 feet of elevation. Nobody pays attention anyway...
