Scare tactics

 

Work, rain, work, rain, sick, work, rain, sick kid, rain, work. What even is a mountain bike? 55 miles YTD.

 

It's not raining! But the ground is soaked. Give it 48 hrs... and it'll be raining again. A fella can't seem to catch a break here.

 

The occurrence of illness and weather on my days off has been uncanny, and the 2 trails that are close and short enough that I can squeeze in pre-work rides have the worst drainage and soil composition around, so they've been out of commission for a while. On the upside, the extra gym time and lack of prolonged high intensity cardio from riding brought about by rainy days off mean I've added 4-5 pounds of lean muscle mass in the last 3 months, and I'm stronger than I've been in a while. So I guess it's not all bad. But I miss my bike.

 

Cuz I skied, snowboarded and played a hockey game. Sorry I'm such a slacker.

 

I've hesitated to post here... This thread is usually depressing.

A little over two weeks ago, I did a Lower Sam to Sunset loop from the house on the Moxie single speed. It's my quickie loop... 10/2400. I felt some tightness in my left shoulder on the way up Lower Sam, but I didn't think too much of it. Heading down Sunset, however, I ended up with shooting pain from neck to shoulder to upper arm. I thought for sure that I re-injured the rotator cuff. I couldn't hold the bars by the bottom and had no strength in my left arm. It felt quite similar to 2019, but worse... Being a lifelong leftie, that's not an ideal situation. The pain was constant and didn't subside at all before the doctor visit.

True Grit came off the table, and I scheduled a visit with an orthopedist. This was the year I was going to try for the 100 miler- banking on residual fitness from Frog Hollow last November.

Doctor visit #1 last week- He diagnosed that the rotator cuff is no worse than when I injured it at Koko in 2019. My current issue actually stems from a bulging disc in my neck that is pinching nerves. A round of steroids had no effect...

Doctor visit #2- He ordered an MRI and referred me to a spinal specialist.

I'm hoping we end up with something "simple" like cortisone and physical therapy...

And no, An e-bike won't help. A bionic arm and shoulder might...

 

We can rebuild him. We have the technology!!!

I didn't ride my bike today because...
A.) Daughter had three water polo games - 7 am, 8:40 and 12:50. I felt obliged to watch and cheer.
B.) More rain
C.) Local trails probably closed
D.) Hockey game at 7:20 pm (we won)

 

Giving my trail a little TLC….

 

Hillside wilderness preserve was actually open this weekend, plus not so bad weather.

Buuuuut. Had a date with norovirus or something similar middle of the night Thursday, completely out of action friday.. tired and weak on Saturday. Not so bad Sunday but also 2 kids with RSV in the house.

Nope....it's our Club long sleeve jersey I wear only for trailwork. My Oakley boots are from 2006 and just about dead. This is the only time I wear pants other than going to work..

Figured out why the mower wouldn't start.
Spousal Unit kinda made the exhaust valve dissapear in the her mower. Time to replace both heads.
No ride today.
