I’d characterize it as entertaining, not disconcerting.:)

Actually you lose 2000, but gain 1200 :) You end the segment 800 lower than you began it :) But regardless... there is only one hill that is all that challenging, and it is only one half mile long. What is your PR on that segment? 40 minutes? 35? It just isn't that long of a segment. The guy who posted the trail review makes it sound like a death march.

By the way, I don't see that anyone directly answered your question. The Maple/Motorway loop is substantially more difficult than the Whiting / Luge loop.

For me, a Whiting / Luge loop (with some extra credit thrown in) is 1150 calories. Maple Springs / Motorway (from the upper parking lot) is 1800 calories. Additionally, Maple Springs / Motorway is a little more secluded/remote. Nothing as bad as what the trail reviewer said, but the reality is that it is a pretty big ride IF you have never been up to Main Divide before. However the Motorway is (to me) a much more fun DH than the Luge... in addition to being a little more difficult and 3x as long. Of the two ways to get there from west of the mountains, the Maple Springs route is the faster /easier versus approaching it via Blackstar and from the north.

If your brother-in-law is a big biker, he should know what his fitness / pain level is :) Ask him how much climbing he wants to do, and plan accordingly :)

Those guys were beyond clueless... Main Divide is chunky in spots- chunkier than the Luge. But it is still just a fire road, and only 6 miles long at that. You may even see Jeeps up there... Probably some motos.

And like Bonsai says, Motorway is worth it... 3 times longer than the luge, slightly steeper, loose, fast and fun.

There are probably some videos on my YouTube if you want to check it out.

    Go check it out... :)

If someone gets rescued on that ride after consulting with this group, he should sell his bike immediately and take up knitting.

I found this one in the archives... With @mtnbikej and @mike .

Only 50 seconds devoted to Maple Springs and Main Divide... 13 miles condensed to less than a minute. :D The rest is Motorway.

It looks like I have the 3.0 on the front of the Chameleon. I was in my fat phase.

I'll go. It's been a minute since I've done Motorway (like since 2006). I think I can manage from Silverado - but not from the tree farm.

Ooooh - that's gonna present a choice between riding my bike up Maple Springs vs skiing/snowboarding 2 feet of fresh snow. I think I know which will win out on my list of priorities at this moment. Maybe if it were next week.

The good news is that the forest service will most likely close the gate to vehicle traffic if it rains for the next few days. That makes getting to Motorway so much more enjoyable.

Who says we can only do it once?

You might snag more riders with a ride invitation. :whistling: Many here appreciate a social pace; you put that info in the invitation. The form is kind of a fun motivator and forces one to think logistics and team leading. Yes, you will be the ride “leader.” With support. :geek:
