If you’re lucky enough not to smash it with your skull inside, how long do you use your helmet before replacing it? 5 years after manufacture date? 5 years after purchase? 3 years? Or do you still use the foam eggshell from the 80s?

Usually about 3 or 4 years if I don't use it to it's potential.

I have two older helmets. I don't know why. I don't wear them.

All of my current helmets in rotation are within 3 years old. My full faces (2 Bell Transfer 9s) I will replace if I crash hard or if the interior starts rotting. My trail helmets (1 TLD A1, 1 IXS RS, 1 7iDp) will get replaced about every 5 years, or after a serious smack.

I probably replace mine every 2-3 yrs. The one I smashed on Tapia was almost brand new:whistling:

    Great helmet.
I replace my helmet about every year and a half or so. Sometimes I just get a new one because I want to. Most common cause of my helmet death is banging into low hanging trees and branches and/or visor separation or failure.

Good question. I have a hard time finding a helmet that fits my head comfy. Giro has been the best fit so far. I think my current Giro is a few years old now.

I've had two of their helmets over the years. The most recent being a MIPS road helmet. It fits like a glove.

I generally replace my helmets every couple of years unless I "use" it then it's replaced immediately.

About 45 years old. It’s made of leather. State of the art in the seventies, until the Skid Lid came out. Don’t have the SL anymore. The leather one hangs proudly in my shop, homage to some neurotic pre-teen bent on outdoor recreation.

So, seven years for my POC Trabec Race seems pretty new. I wore mine out then took the wife’s and bought her a new one. So I didn’t have to make another custom visor. :sneaky:

Knock on wood, I haven't needed my helmet for about ten years now, though I religiously wear it - even on fireroad climbs.

I usually go four or five years with a helmet. I have my GoPro mount and light mount on it, so it looks a little like a Mars lander. Usually I go until the pads on the inside wear out, and the helmet design is so old they stop selling pad replacements :)

Thank you all for your input. I have a Bell Super manufactured in 2013 that was used sparingly by the Mrs until 2016 and hasn’t been used since. Not even sweat stains on the chin strap, so I’m thinking it’s OK to pull it out of retirement for a year or two since my other Bell Super of similar age has gotten crusty from my personal use. What’s the worst that can happen?

@SnakeCharmer IMO the 6D helmets fit very similar. I was wearing Giro until I tried in a 6D. They are kinda pricey but worth it. I usually buy a helmet when on sale, even if it’s not time to replace.

I purchase a helmet every two years regardless of how much it's used. I currently have a Kali Interceptor, but looking at purchasing a Leatt right now. I almost got the Bontrager Wavecell when it came out and Trek employees got a good deal on it. Like a smoking deal.

My Fox was 3 years old when I face planted and cracked the front. The Bell replacement is 1 year old...

Does the plastic start to fatigue over the years, even if it doesn't have a substantial impact?

I hear similar to rubber in tires, O3 (ozone) within the habitable troposphere of earth [not to be confused with the Ozone layer in the Stratosphere] mixes with sunlight and generates NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) which degrade the materials. Almost like sucking the “moisture” or “juice” out of the helmet foam and rendering it crusty and friable. On the other hand, I hear this is all fake news, and the world (and our helmets) are cleaner than ever. If ever there were a dimmer wit, it should be protected with a sound helmet.

Older than my kids, time to replace but last time I tried to buy one I couldn’t make up my mind. Still have ~$400 to the Path in gift cards so it’s next on my list.

They sold out on Trek U, super fast. I check now and then to see if they have a black one in my size.

I decided to replace my helmet after about 8 years. It's actually more comfortable than my new MIPS super wonder helmet. I still wear my old helmet on my cargo bike rides with the kids.

Probably going on 3 years now. Would still be wearing the previous TLD A1 but the stabilizer retention thingy broke on its own. I've been thinking of swapping the new stabilizer to the old black TLD helmet. The Blue is annoying me even though it does go with the bike.

Well, poop, my helmet is probably due. I like the one I have...can't remember what the heck it is other than MIPS.

30 years ago  TLD, first one I remember with a big visor. Wore out the black one, still have the white one. I don't think it has MIPS, I don't know what it means anyway.

That’s the one I have. It feels really solid, but not too heavy. I also like the longer visor:thumbsup:
