Yeah that's BS to whomever would rig a bike without brakes like that. Getting your bike stolen sucks but intent to do bodily harm is way worse IMO. Like a shotgun rigged over your door so if the door opens it goes off on a burglar

 

I guess I'm in the minority, but If the video is actually real,I'm fine with it. Don't steal the bike and nothing happens to you. Thieves suck.

Well...if they didn't steal the bike....this would not have happened.

If I ever leave my bike unattended when I'm on my ride in the past....I loosen the QR's, shift the shifter/s so that it jumps. Kinda serves the same purpose. It might get damaged, but they didn't get away with it.

 

I'm gonna check the brakes next time I take off on a random bike.

 

This type of prank could backfire if the thieve gets a good lawyer. Thieves suck but setting them up for laughs on youtube is just as bad.

 

Can they really be so oblivious as to not notice there's a friggin' cable attached to the bike?????

 

Funny as hell but I think it's fake. Those guys just suddenly decide to crash exactly in front of the camera. They just suddenly turn the bars to force an endo.

The messengers in DTLA caught two teenage bike thieves red-handed. The delinquents were beaten, stripped naked, and left on the streets of skid row. Suitable punishment for a bike thief.

 

There were no brakes and a cable attached to make the bike snap to a stop when it ran out of leash...
I think there are safer ways to humiliate a bike thief.

It's not your bike leave it alone and everyone will be safe.

 

I have mixed feelings. I laugh and cringe every time I watch this. Every thief in the video appears to be a hobo. Injuries to these dudes are not lessons learned, especially when they walk away with concussions and back sprains. Physical ailments to hobos are detrimental not only to their health but also to their potential for ascension through society. This prank negatively affects the entire community.

Still thieves can go suck it. It it were my bike, by all means may they smash the pavement with their faces.

Maybe it's the presentation in the video that puts me off. Not sure. Mixed feelings.

It makes me sad that anyone would put personal property over the safety of anyone even a thief.

Bike thieves suck. I get it. but those homeless looking guys don't deserve broken nuts or collar bones for stealing the bike..
What's worse is the pranksters making the video...

I always feel that thieves are stealing from themselves - but they don't understand it.

I have two issues with these videos:

First, that the guy setting these "pranks" up is entrapping people. These people aren't out stealing bikes - they are just walking down the street and there is a bike sitting there with no one around and it isn't locked up and there is no indication that it isn't just abandoned. I'm not sure that they could even be accused of committing a crime, since the bike is just sitting there on public property with no one around. Yeah it is clear that they KNOW they are taking someone else's property, but I definitely get the feeling that if the bike wasn't sitting there, they wouldn't be looking for other things to steal. The videographer is basically initiating the crime - for laughs.

Second, the guy is setting these stunts up to actively hurt people - and is getting a kick out of it. So you have him entrapping homeless people into committing theft, and then laughing as he hurts them. Not a fan.

Now if you really WANTED to do something about bike theft, you would go after REAL thieves (the kind who do it as a living/for real money) and confront them in a way that would cause them to rethink their career choice. That doesn't include dumping them on a sidewalk so they break their jaw, but it DOES include showing up at their home with 10 big dudes and a camera crew to take back stolen property, or something similar.

 

OJ Simpson tried that. Look where it got him.

 

Notice most of these cases are in rough parts of town. My son left his scooter in the sidewalk around our house and it was still there the following afternoon.

 

That is not cool, these are not bike thieves, they are mentally ill homeless people.

 

Give it a few weeks. The spoiled punk teenager or stoned young adult living at mom's house down the street will snag it eventually...even in Mission Viejo.
