First time on Hawkins Ridge trail due to years of rumors of large trees across the trail. Read report about trail being clear from South Mt Hawkins to the Pacific Crest Trail...the report is true. It is one jewel of a trail going up is tough the trail is only a out and back due to no bikes on the PCT.

Been wanting to ride the full ridge again; glad to hear there's been work on it. By the way, that trail is not open to to motorized vehicles.

Crystal Lake to South Mt. Hawkins TRAIL IS A 14.7 MILE OUT AND BACK, located near Azusa, CA that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and camping and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.

Length of the ride depends - as always - on where you start. I've ridden from Glendora to Crystal lake...that would add 34 miles and about 7,000 feet of elevation gain.

Blues Rider account is correct but does not take into account the actual Hawkins Ridge Trail that is a two mile out and back to the PCT. His route is South Mt Hawkins Fireroad. Which has been repaired. Still best ridden on a bike with 27.5+ or fat tires. If you want pure singletrack there are better options out there.

Nice Dean, you always seem to ride the least ridden, most remote trails. You are the go to guy for trail info.

Still looks like a "Have to", ride to me. I know a lot of guys only want that "singletrack only" feel or ride. Me, I like all mountain biking, I have done some incredible fire road only rides and had the best of times. Thanks for sharing this Dean.
    I'm gonna hit that.

I'm game. I don't remember when I rode the fire road from Crystal Lake up, but I did see the singletrack trail sign above. Starting at the store would be optimal.

I would like to ride this one for sure but I am seeing this is a hiking trail, no bicycles. :poop:

I've only cast a cursory glance at this area... I dug out a Frankos map of the San Gabes. According to him, most of the Crystal Lake trails (regardless of whether they're hiking and/or riding) are west of Sheep Mt Wilderness. South Mt Hawkwins (and the "Rattlesnake Peak" trail south of there) skirt the wilderness area. Wondering if this might be a better option. Kind of a long(ish) way to go for a 10 mile ride...?

I'll have to dig up my 1995 Thomas Guide. There ain't no wilderness designations in there so it must be okay.:whistling:
