I'm guessing it's icy in some spots. There's always dogwood camp to the west just down the road as an alternative if you get to exploration and it's treacherous.

Not a direct answer, but I think they close the Keller peak road for the winter, not sure if they gate it but pretty sure they don't plow it. Of course you can always hike bike up the trail as far as you can and turn around....

Depends on if you are @mtnbikej and @Faust29 or the rest of us.

There is a 4-mile figure 8 that can be doubled if you ride it the opposite way. I am willing to bet the locals know of additional trails from camp since it is close to town. Every inch of trail at Dogwood is loaded, but anyone can roll around the jumps if they so choose.

    Thank you for asking.

Anyone been up that way yet this spring? Is the gate open for the pavement road up to Keller peak? I know they got a bunch of snow up there this past winter, wondering if the trail is even ride-able yet, and if the road is open. Thx, may give it a go monday 4/24.
@Tom the Bomb, I know you hit this allot, you been up there yet this spring?

It's not. You'd be fine. It's got lots of little tech and maybe one go around section or walk-your-bike section but other than that, it's a blast. This is coming from a guy is somewhat frightened by techy trails.

It's probably 85-90% flowy singletrack, as @snakecharme mentions, a few short sections some might want to dismount for. very little exposure that I recall. Unfortunately, it's only 4.5 miles down, so probably need to do it twice to make the trip worthwhile. You can either pedal up the paved road (very little traffic...it only goes to the lookout tower or hiking trails), or pedal up the trail (a bit more difficult). RR from a couple years ago below.

Or, meet a buddy up there and shuttle it... I've grinded up the pavement before and I've shuttled it before.

Well, the idea is to stay up in Big Bear and ride for a few days, Exploration Trail being one of the rides during the visit.

Yeah that's what I was hoping for, but not sure gate is open to drive/shuttle or ride up the road. The last time there I was solo, and I rode up the trail, which was fun, but more difficult. The altitude bothers my body some too so depend on your sensitivity to it as to how long it will take to climb

Two trips up with one to the lookout tower, I think is around 20mi and 300o ft. Steep climb, slow going, usually worn out at the end. Totally worth it. We have a cabin near Lake Arrowhead so just at 20 minute drive for me :)

    Yep, that climb hurts bad.

Call the Forestry Dept. and ask.

I take my girls up there in the Summer to escape the heat below. They go shopping and I go riding. :D
