You've kind of got it backward, scan. Wider bars increase the wrist angle inward, and that's exacerbated by lack of backsweep. All bad for long-term comfort.

Hang your elbows at your sides and hold your hands a couple of feet apart as though grabbing a bar. Your natural wrist angle itself has backsweep. A lot of it. Yes, you can point your elbows outward to reduce that backsweep, and grip a wider fake bar with less inward wrist angle. Like you do in attack position. But there is zero reason to be in that position consistently for days. I like 790 mm bars moto style bars for general MTB, including long day rides. But for maximum comfort during multiple days in a row, nothing beats a bar designed for that. I'm not theorizing – I got worked on 60 days of bikepacking with a normal wide bar. Next time on the route was very different with the Salsa Bend.

    Aye carumba!
I just pulled the left grip and my bars ARE 780! I thought the stock bars come 800.

Is that a golf putter head or an MTB grip...?:Roflmao:confused:

Don't cut yet, try the grips first. One change at a time.

    Laugh now funny boy!
The grips ain’t gonna work anyhow... they interfere with my grip shift operation.

    So....
I did look at my bars and I did indeed focus on fashion before function and had the bars flat to the sweep, so I did roll them forward to maximize the sweep to be at maximum perpendiculation (I made that word up) to my wrist.

    Thanks Sharone!
I’ll give them a try on the Strawberry Peak Express manana!

800+ mm bars are like IPAs - everyone thinks they have to consume them to be cool, and the more extreme, the cooler they are. My bars are 100 IBU!

Real racers - those who make their living on the EWS - are running 740-780mm bars.

I can't tell you how many women I've seen who are soooo stretched out trying to run 800+ that they are compromising their health. It looks ridiculous and can't be good for their control or physiology.

That said, I am now getting 10 tattoos, buying some 820s, drinking a 120 IBU IPA and I am double burr grinding my Fair Trade, Italian pressed coffee. Does anyone have some mustache wax I can borrow? I love trends!

You can just cut one grip short, no? I did that with an Ergon set for our Rohloff grip shift – worked spectacularly.

I think the grip clamps on the inside :stop:

Edit: I just saw the outside clamp on the model he got. Never mind, as you were.

I could easily cut the grip on the inside. But “ergonomically “ it looks that it will be difficult to shift my gripshift.

You'll have to try it – I'll send you my hacked off one. :) It worked fine with a GX1/14 sp Rohloff shifter, but of course it will not feel like a cylindrical grip.

If you have bigger hands, then GA2 Fat are a nice size. I ran GE1s prior to trying the GA2 Fats, and while I liked the GE1 shape, I prefer a larger grip.

Before Ergon grips, my favorite grip was the ODI Rogue.

I recently tried the Revolution Suspension Grips. I mention these because they force/allow your hands to be 20-30mm narrower than with other grips due to their end cap design. So without cutting your bars you have a narrower bar feel. I’m not sure if that’s a good reason to try these grips, but I figured I’d mention it. A lot of people swear by these grips.

How will you customize those to work with your grip shifter Mikie?

One problem with the big wing ended ones is that it gets in the way when it gets steep and you lean back on your bike. You won't be able to rotate your wrist to get a good grip. I used to run those too but I was losing control on steeps. The GA3 is a good middle ground that still let me adjust my grip when it gets steep.

I was referring to the pic of the bars with the back sweep, that's what reduces the wrist angle, keeping it more in a neutral position.
