Didn't use STRAVA today and...

Thank you all for not going all zeroes and ones on this. I am not suggesting there's a right or wrong. I'm just encouraging to disengage from the grid for one ride. I should take my own advice and try doing a ride without posting it on IMTB. ( shudder...)

 

If you ride but don't post, did it really happen???

 

I will do a ride without Strava.....if you do a ride WITH Strava and oostbit.

 

I assume STRAVA is free and I don't have to use any identifying names or information? And what the hell is oostbit? Time to crank up the Google machine.

But if I go to the trouble of establishing an account and taking a sip of the Kool-Aid, you have to be with me, then you have to do at least one additional - J-Zilla level ride without the data elixir. Doing without the data while riding with me would be like me riding with my daughter - it doesn't really count as a ride, comparatively.

EDIT: The Google didn't know what "oostbit" is either.

 

I speak Siri... Oostbit is "post it" in human language.

 

Ahhh, then no deal. I'm not publicizing my MtB ineptitude. I have an illusion of competence I must maintain.

 

The Internet loves you. So much money being made from people who say "I assume it is free and I can't be identified."

Just a few pointers:

So... they know who you are, your phone number, what kind of phone you use, your sex, your weight, how old you are, your health and fitness level, where you live, can track where you go, know who you hang out with, can read and track and record and data mine anything you write on the site, know what products you use, what ads you click on, what articles you read, where you are when you access their site... I could go on and on.

I run it every ride, but it's more just a comparison and fitness check. I honestly don't get into the mentality of chasing it and half the time I forget it's even running on my phone. It's just a good metric for me to compare how I 'feel' during and after a ride compared to the stats. I know when I don't feel as tired or spent and the times are consistently on the faster end, that I'm going in the correct fitness direction. But it also motivates me when I see slow times and don't have a reason.

 

You don't have to provide them with accurate info (weight, fitness, name, etc). And as you can use a third party GPS tracker and upload it, you also don't need the app. Pretty silly as EVERYONE else is tracking your smartphone to just try and hide from Strava, but if you so wish you can hide most of your details from them and still use the service.

 

How about this, then: I'll forego Strava on a ride with you, at Aliso. All you have to do in return is upload your FLoop with me to Strava.

 

So to confirm, in order to benefit from Strava you should:

(1) Lie
(2) Not use their app
(3) Hey, everyone else is doing it, so that makes it ok
(4) Hiding "most" of your details is good enough

Just yanking your chain because there are always trade-offs UNLESS you go to a paid subscription model AND the company implements a hard-core anonymity policy. The vast majority of the public would rather sell their privacy than have to "pay" for a service, so there ya go.

Don't get me STARTED on Facebook Oh you poor souls with Facebook accounts...

I keep all my stuff public and accurate. I am in the camp of you either stay open, or you stay off the internet. No sense TRYING to protect sensitive info as it just leads you to a false sense of security and leads you to saying/doing stuff online you may regret later. Nothing is a secret on social media, even if you do have privacy controls on, and that is assuming no one jacks your account!

 

Phew! I’m glad I don’t have any incriminating photos of myself posted online!

BTW, I didn’t use Strava today because I didn’t ride my MTB.

So then how you will keep track of distance, elevation gain/loss, speed, calories burned, PRs, KOMs, temp, humidity, date, birthdays, breaking news, stock market updates, Cold War status, earthquakes, weather on Mars, meteor tracking, sun spots, and the advancement of universal armegeddon?
