Some threads could become great places for quick research, such as the 5 Star product thread.
But when they go off the rails with jokes and banter, it makes the thread harder to browse
    for good info.
So I'm proposing the guideline for these specifically defined topics to include the deleting of these
extra comments......maybe after a day or two, or when and if the moderator sees fit. Only to
make for a cleaner and easier to read topic.
If this becomes a known standard, people shouldnt feel slighted when their comment disappers.

    Anyone agree or care?

I personally would just leave them. I think this a pretty friendly and laid back forum and the banter actually supports that. I see it as more like a bunch of guys hanging out in the garage, drinking a beer and talking bikes than a Wikipedia for bike info. Just my humble opinion.

    No.

    Who does the editing?
Who decides which comments stay or go?
Will we have a politically correct comment enforcer?
Will we delete photos that somebody may find "offensive"

I think going outside the lines once in a while on a thread give the site it's "personality" and editing in the name of streamlining your online experience should be done at the individual user level. (block user)

It is the internet.....we are all human.....threads will get derailed from time to time.

However, it takes little to no effort to skim past the crap to find the good nuggets of information.

At the end of the day, we don't need the extra moderation....Mikie has been really good about giving us all a lot of slack in our leashes.

We had too much moderation on the other site.

This was meant for only narrowly defined threads, like 5 Star products. It would be pretty obvious if it were relevant or not.
Keep the comments for a week or whatever, then clean it up and have a nice sticky/pinned post.

What it seems is that some people want posts that lack the interactive spontaneity of this online community. If I want boring product reviews I'll go to MTBR. Overmoderation almost killed that other site.
Seems that's the way these forum websites go. Censorship, exclusion, then collapse.

Next thing you know, you'll want my guns!

No on the post deletes. Another option would be allow the OP to delete the off topic posts.

In all fairness I see everyone's point. I know that sounds political, but Scottay makes a great point, but so does everybody else...
    Let the debate continue!

EDIT: This was also why I started a Products Review page using completely different software.
The switch to Xenforo caused havoc with it.

Speaking as one who frequently engages in the banter, I agree with most of the posters above. I'd rather not see posts disappear, as it is part of the atmosphere around here. The censorship was also one of the biggest reasons that I hardly ever posted on STR. It also made threads harder to read, because pertinent data would always be a casualty, and the threads became disjointed.

With that said; however, Mikie has the right to do whatever he so chooses. I know of one occasion that he chose to use the "delete" button, and it was the right call. He's building a decent community, and I don't believe that messing with the formula would be going in the right direction.

I get what Scottay was trying to achieve. Me, I go w the flow (so I don't care).

How does that expression go: Familiarity breeds contempt. Regularity is better. :poop:

This sounds good when you say it fast. But, Do we really want to give Herz the power to delete posts from the "I rode my bike" thread? Anything that mentions asphalt would be toast! As would mtnbikej's 80 mile little spins that he believes are misfiled! And probably anything that mentions 29 inch wheels!

I can picture him pounding the delete button while laughing maniacally.

Hopefully, y'all know me better than that! I think it's way more fun to read the meanderings and then try to bring it back around. And I think it's fun, and natural, to meander. The only posts I would ever choose to censor if I could are the ones I can - my own.

Oh - and I don't see very many posts in which people attack other members - not on this forum. I did it once or twice when provoked, but most of the comments I've read that were aimed at specific individuals were fairly benign and in the spirit of good-natured ribbing. This group seems to know where the boundary line is and will self regulate.

PS: 29ers are really fast. Long rides with lots of vertical are incredibly impressive, and road riding is scary dangerous!

I've been known to curse 29ers when they leave me in the dust. But then I realized so do 27.5s, other 26ers, 24s and Striders.

That's what I like about this place over the others. We can give and take, and no one (at least so far) seems to take it personally. Everyone seems to understand it's all in fun.

What was this thread about again??

New guy votes "no." I was a very active member of a standup paddle forum for a number of years. Guys from all over the world collaborating and pushing the design envelope and moving the sport forward. The site owner decided to monetize his site by deleting "design" posts about board shapers who did not sponsor the site. (He denied it... But I think that is exactly what he was doing). Two years later, the site has very little to do with design, I very seldom visit, and IMHO the site is a shell of what it once was. Slightly off topic, but the accumulation of all posts give a forum its personality... And reveal its poster's personalities.

Deleting posts is not the way to go. I know the proposal was very limited, but I see it as a slippery slope.

    Strand... Out.

Be happy with a small, friendly corner bar while you have one, and be careful what you wish for. Soon enough the idiots from uptown will be there, the juke box won't be rocking Social D anymore, the floor will be swept, and you'll have to fork over plastic to start a tab.
