Kinda sounds like an intentional act.....just coincidence that it was a cyclist. o_O

yea, I'm guessing road rage. That section of crown valley has 3 right turn lanes and no bike lane, so the rider probably took up the right hand lane.

Not sure if it's accurate, but the Fox article says the bike and driver were both traveling north on PCH.

I've ridden through that intersection a few times... :( WTF is wrong with people...

Could be, the bike was resting in the intersection just where that turn lane comes out. Just thinking that coming down crown valley taking up a lane could be more likely to trigger road rage in a deranged individual rather than just cruising in the bike lane on PCH.

The driver mowed down the cyclist from behind, then got out and stabbed him to death.

Less than 2 miles from my house.

    I'm f@cking speechless...

That is slightly incorrect. 2 right turn lanes from Crown Valley onto northbound PCH, but yes, the bike lane disappears at 7 Seas road just before the two right turn lanes begin.

Northbound PCH before Crown Valley has one of those situations where the right turn lane is on the right side of the bike lane going straight. Check aerial view here. No matter what - if this was road rage, it is among the worst I have ever heard of.

You are right it's only 2 lanes turning right onto PCH. Sounds like it wasn't a factor if it was on PCH, but that section on crown valley with no bike lane is dangerous.

Last night I did something I regret. I was hauling the Meegies in the bike trailer while running errands, and I merged through traffic into a left-turn lane along Route 66. We escaped physically, and the Meegies had no idea what was happening, but I keep thinking of what could have gone wrong. Driving sucks.

Some new off the grid trails in the area that drop into a private community near this location. I wonder if this has impact
    on the accident.

I spend enough time on the road whether it be for work, commuting, or either one of my bikes to see that are a lot of people out there that don't give :poop::poop: about anyone around them. Of course, in this case, taking someone's life is beyond extreme and this does indeed seem intentional.

The cyclist was a surgeon at Mission Laguna Beach, which is just a mile or two up PCH.

I wouldn't think so. Those trails are quite a bit north of the murder site, and he was northbound, so it's not like he just dropped off some unauthorized trail through a private community. And the ******* suspect lives in Long Beach.

He was in the bike lane and stopped while waiting for the light to turn green. Just as the light turned green and he began to pedal the Lexus zoomed up from behind in the bike lane hitting him at high speed.

Hard to speculate, but it seems as if he was definitely targeted. Who knows ... maybe doc was banging the dude's wife or something. Hopefully we'll find out when he is in court.

I think we all think it was too personal to be random road rage - but it seems highly unlikely that these two have a shared history, based on the superficial characteristics of where they lived and ethnicity. I do hope there's a causal connection to help explain the level of vitriol, but I fear it was just extreme road rage.

I'm going with road rage... Looks like the Florida kind coming to SoCal.

Time to check the FL inmate site, and see if they're still locked up...

NO if you look at the video he was hit from the side in the crosswalk, unlike what people keep saying he was hit from behind!
One of the articles linked says he was hit from behind, but not what the video shows.

I see what you're saying... From the video, it could look like that for a frame or two. But... Consider camera angle, his position relative to the cars in the two opposing lanes, damage to the windshield, and eye witnesses. I think what you're seeing as lateral movement is his first two pedal strokes after the light turned green. He may have been in the crosswalk, but that's still in the plane of the bike lane. It's where I usually stop so the cars see me.

The damage to the front of the car says direct impact, as does the completely crumbled rear wheel on the bike.

That guy was moving- maybe trying to use the bike lane to pass everyone as the light changed?

Good point, there have been numerous cases of doctors being attacked by patients/family members over a grudge. Reports indicate the victim was either an ER doc or a surgeon or perhaps both I guess. I still think random crazed road rage, but if not, this might be the likely next explanation. Although the Sheriff hasn't confirmed, witnesses did say he muttered something about white privilege.
