Looks like next weekend I'll be at one of the group camps at Chilao with my running friends. I've only been there once, about 25 years ago. What's riding like right around there? I probably won't have too much time to ride and will have my dogs. That would leave me looking for a XC ride of 5 or so miles possible. Should I bring my bike for that?

And how is Newcombe's? Never been there and looks like that is our dinner plan for Saturday.

Bring your bike. You will be sorry if you don't.
Look for the SIlver Mocassin trail running close to the campgrounds. If you can score more time, check out the trail over Mt Hillyer-so good it's famous. Even the fireroads are sweet.

Hillyer is one of the best singletracks in the San Gabes. From Chilao, take the fire road 3N14 north to where it ends at Santa Clara Divide, go right less than 1/2 mile and go right at the Hillyer trail and follow that until it ends at Horse Flats, look for the Silver Mocassin trail and return to the beginning. This is around 7.5 miles, on my Strava track it's from miles 4 to 11.5.

    Yep!
What they said. Chilao is on my favorite list!
In fact my goal is to make it a New Years Day annual ride.
If you love rock features Hillyer is yummy goodness, Silver Moccasin is sweet flowy/chunky/switchbacky goodness!
Yes, I used the word switchbacky. If you right click and tap Add to dictionary, its totally legit... and so is the riding at Chilao!
    You have already scored!

Absolutely worth it, even if you only get a few miles of Silver Moccasin due to time constraints. Newcomb's is decent - food's good, music is loud, atmosphere is casual.
