Something bad happened to one of the Nuggets, and now a shuttle spot is up for grabs. If left unfilled, the cost of the shuttle would be $40 per Nugget.

If I pay extra do I get to sit next to the legendary Borselleck and bask in his warm glow of awesome-sauce on the shuttle ride?

The plan is to start at 8,450', climb to 9,450', and eventually drop down to 1,550' in accordance with the red track shown here: https://caltopo.com/m/1lbbn

We are watching the weather and will adapt and adjust as needed.

30142112-1AA0-4B25-91F8-28991124AD06.jpeg Big Bear summit at 8,800’ amsl. Snow is minimal, and the next 9 or so days are expected to be mostly sunny. Lightning Gulch summit reaches up to 9,500’, but the DH is west-facing, so I assume the route from the summit to Wildhorse Meadows will be clear.

Anyone who wants a shorter ride can get dropped off at SouthFork Camp or bail early. Anyone who wants to avoid any type of hike-a-bike can start at the Wildhorse Meadows Road and climb the mellow 5.3 mile fireroad to rendezvous with @burt and me (and anyone else who wants to summit Lightning Gulch) at the Meadows.

    BRING A LIGHT!

The Shuttle leaves Hangar 24 in Redlands at 6am Saturday 11/6 with options for drop off at Loch Leven, Angelus Oaks, SouthFork, Heart Bar, Wildhorse Meadows Road, or the @burt station known as Onyx Summit in order to bag Lightning Gulch before dropping down to Wildhorse Meadows and then to SART.

We’re looking at about 50 miles and 5,000’ of climbing (somewhere in the realm of 13,000’ of downhill) for the longest route option.

    BRING A LIGHT!

The weather will be sunny and about 40* at the start (8,500’) and will reach the 70s somewhere along the way before dropping back down as the sun sets at 5:55pm.

This is the trailhead at Onyx Summit at 8,500’

    No snow…

If you decide you want in on all or part of this, post up, and we'll make it work.

    BRING A LIGHT!

Lemme know if you don’t own a light, and you can borrow one of mine. Also, if you don’t ride at night often or at all, your first time on Morton Peak is gonna be narrow and exposed, but you won’t notice the death drops since they’ll just look like black holes into the abyss.

Finally, I am not responsible for your health, safety, or enjoyment. @konakc does a commendable job of making sure people do not perish on the trails. I’ll keep you safe if you are interested in that, but Strava segments are more important that any of you people, so…see you Saturday!

Saturday’s a riding day! Saturday’s a riding day! Saturday’s a riding day! Now does that make you happy? You bet your ass it does!

I estimate about 2.5 to 3 hours to get to South Fork Campground and 5 to 5.5 hours to arrive at Angelus Oaks. Assuming we pedal out by 7:30am, we should arrive at South Fork Camp between 10 and 10:30am and to the Post Office between 12:30 and 1pm. We usually have lunch at The Oaks Restaurant, so if you ride to South Fork Camp by 10am or to the Post Office around 1pm, the timing should be good for a rendezvous. From Angelus Oaks, we plan to ride the Thomas Hunting Grounds to Morton Peak Trail to Hangar 24.

Debating which bike to bring: Heavy AF Full Squish or Slightly Lighter HT?

    HAFFS:
comfy...there's lots of squish. Like ALL the SQUISHY.
can carry 2 bottles on the frame
heavy AF - like 37 lbs w/o water bottles

    SLHT:
comfy for a HT, but still a HT
    slightly lighter
can only carry 1 bottle on the frame

For context, the bottles on the frame are NOT the only water I'll have. I can carry 50-70 oz on me in addition to what's on the frame.

    To the Group: Your opinions?

Do we know if there's water available at Southfork? Or are we self-sufficient until Angelus Oaks?

No water at SouthFork or Hart Bar next weekend. Taps are closed for the season. First water at Angelus Oaks. I’m bringing the SquiggleBug HAFFS with appropriate rear tire to handle the drop in from Lighting Gulch, which I have never seen, but it comes recommended by @burt , so there you go. There will be fast climbers and fast descenders and fast round-trippers. The only slow Nugget will be me.

    Good to know.

Nice. I haven't done anything this big in years. I'm not too worried - I believe I'm good for it, based on the past couple months of riding. But, being out for 11+ hours seems daunting.

I'm leaning toward the HAFFS as well. Got a little time to keep over-thinking it. Certainly gonna be an adventure!

I have to say the thought had crossed my mind, but I don't know if attempting 2000ft more climbing than I've ever done on what will be my biggest (dirt) ride of the year ranks as the brightest of ideas. Probably a good thing it developed an annoying bb tick on todays ride, I can't be arsed fixing it so will take the squishy bike with gears.
