Cool for sure to have long distance routes. BikepackingRoots might have something to say about this statement though: "The Great American Rail-Trail is the most ambitious biking initiative the country has ever seen." It follows the route of the Erie Canal for 360 miles from Albany to Buffalo. Mostly flat...

 

I am pretty envious of those East Coast canal routes. There is one that goes like 300 miles to right near DC. B&O naybe?
I remember as a kid that part of the California Aqueduct was going to be a bike trail the whole way. It's the longest California "river" at something like 440 miles.
Over time I have looked into possibilities if this Very few reports that I can find. Some about 70 miles might be available from near Tracy to Santa Nella or so.
I keep threatening to road trip and try some.
Since 9/11 I know a lot of water system access has been cut off.
I believe Antelope Valley area may have had a lot of access cut off.

 

SOT hikers walk along the LA aquaduct for 30 miles or so between Liebre Mtn and Tehachapi. Pretty sure you can drive it all the way to Mojave. And parts of it along Hwy 395 as well.

 

Replacing road bridges over the CA Aqueduct used to be a huge “to-do” from a historical resources perspective, but we’ve streamlined the process to the point the State Historic Preservation Officer just reviews a few essential paragraphs of a 100-pager for concurrence.

 

A mountain biker died after crashing on a trail in Point Mugu State Park on Saturday morning, authorities said.

The accident was reported around 9:20 a.m. on a rugged trail above Pacific Coast Highway in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m., the Ventura County Sheriff's air unit was called to assist with the downed cyclist, said sheriff's Capt. Dean Worthy.

The crash took place on the Guadalasca Trail, he said, which cuts through steep, technical terrain near the Backbone Trail. The cyclist, a man in his 60s, had reportedly been riding with friends when he crashed his bike and lost consciousness, Worthy said. The cyclist's city of residence was not immediately known Saturday.

 

Ooof. That sucks. May his loved ones find solace in his passing.
