Ride Name: Bommer Canyon Open Access 1/18/20
    When: Saturday January 18, 2020
    Time: 8am
    Where: Bommer Canyon, Irvine, CA
    Ride Description or Details:
These trails are open once a month, so they're in great shape, and offer up some nice chunk and tech. There are some parts on each trail that are advanced (although I think there's been some re-routing since I rode last?), but you can walk whatever is over your comfort limit.

Plenty options, but parking in Bommer Canyon makes for a nice run back to the car, with some good flowy singletrack and a very fun rock roller.

Hate to say this (and add in a little guilt...)

I ride the Cleveland National Forest maybe twice a year. Never ridden Joplin, unlikely to ride it any time soon, and unlikely to ride it much if ever in the future. No guilt skipping a trail work day there.

You want guilt? Here are the upcoming trail work days hosted by Laguna Canyon Foundation:

January 12 is “sold out” (these things always sell out so I never understand when anyone complains about lack of volunteers in the greater Laguna area).

I’m planning on being at the January 25 or February 1 trail work day.

I've done a pretty good share of work in Laguna and The Luge. Not a ton, but frequently enough to partly assuage my guilt. I have ridden Joplin exactly once, but I still feel I need to help out if I can. I want to ride it after we (they) re-hab it.

I am a big fan of these access days. I park at the Quail Hill community center. My previous attempts to get people out to this ride have been totally unsuccessful :/

Either way you start out with a hell climb. I like finishing up on Ridge Route and ending in Bommer, but have started from Quail also. Let me know if you'll be out there.

Hey @Mikie you're not afraid of an early call time are ya? Bring @Voodoo Tom and show him what's good behind the Orange Curtain (as long as you two don't mind slow climbing).

I am not in town this upcoming weekend, so cant make it. With the last open access day i did Fox Run which was in the best shape it has been for a long time. Nice and steep and a little (well planned) reroute at the bottom:thumbsup:

I hear Fox and Rabbit have been sanitized since 2013. It’s been a long time since I rode there, but I used to live in the Quail Hill area and looked forward to Open Access Day every month. On a few RADZ rides, they claimed they were exempt from the Irvine Ranch restrictions and rode those trails anytime they wanted. I believe the latter to be true because I suspect those trails would be taken back by nature if they were ridden only once a month on Saturdays and the occasional Wednesday docent-led ride (which usually was comprised of riders in over their heads).

I didn’t ride any of these until 2016? So if they were sanitized I only know the sanitized version. Rabbit isn’t difficult except for the rocks at the bottom.
Fox had some pucker sections on it last time I rode it (2018?). I’ll report back next week.

I feel discriminated against since I work on weekends, I can never taste these trails near my home.

Looks like the rock/slab section at the bottom of Rabbit has been rerouted. Start at 8:30:
