He needed a new shifter, cable and a new hanger. But the hanger is pretty hard to get.

Given his current setup a coat hanger would be an upgrade.

Sounds like you got off easy this time. Usually, a jacked-up bike like that is accompanied by a character of a similar demeanor-broke!

"Bike shop guys are always trying sell me stuff I don't need....my friend fixed it, now it don't work... I just need it to get from the methadone clinic to the sober living house."

Yeah, we couldn’t fix it because it needed a hanger that was impossible to get. So he was screwed. But I went from a shop that the customer base was mostly low or no income people that wanted a favor, hookup or a solid. I am sure that most of the bikes I worked on were stolen multiple times.

Older Sram Code brake. 4-piston, each Piston extended out to a different length. Resulted in the pads wearing extremely unevenly. Customer took the old pads and ran off, embarrassed, and returned later with some new TruckerCo pads he ordered off the internet.
He ordered the wrong pads... Doh!

Got hammered with brake bleeds today.
Started with some Juicy 3s that had a stuck piston and eventually needed a caliper rebuild.
Pieces of o-rings in the fluid... Typical
    IMG_20181221_123652.jpg

An easy bleed of Juicy Ultimates and a pair of flat mount Rival roadies that rounded out the Dot bleeds. The Rivals needed to be bled with the pads in order to get the right pad clearance. Makes things interesting.
Finally had a German nightmare from Trickstuff. The C-41 is supposed to be the most powerful bicycle brake available. It is quite an impressive stopper. Everything was lightweight, machined to the nth degree, and not easily bled.
I watched a 10 minute video in German in order to figure out how to do the job. Where's @Faust29 when I need him?
Gave my 2, 2.5, 3mm and T-10 wrenches a workout but finally got it done

Customer comes in and requests a front brake bleed.
I tell him he needs new pads...
    "Why?"
    IMG_20190105_165939.jpg
You also need the proper adapter for your rotor...
    "Why?"
    IMG_20190105_170009.jpg
"Let me keep the old ones. I'll use them for spares."

Damn! No good deed goes unpunished. Noticed a customer's rack was loose, went to tighten it and... Snap!
    IMG_20190223_154254.jpg IMG_20190223_160231.jpg
The bolt was cross threaded in of course, so I filed it down and tried to back it out using two nuts against each other... Finally just cranked it out with some vice grips...

Sometimes I wonder if people are really trying to save money? Or they just don't know any better? If you are running your own cables I would think you would know something about it, particularly in this day and age of the Internet and "how to replace your xyz cable" videos. I mean, it's not like it's a huge investment...

Seems like my shop nightmares always involve disc brakes...

Some 20 year old Magura Louise brakes. Very spongy, definitely need to be bled. Pads and Rotors rusted...
    IMG_20190315_130758.jpg

    Using Magura branded hubs
    IMG_20190315_130812.jpg

Only the outside piston moved. Pushes the rotor into the inner pad. Made for making noise
    IMG_20190315_131001.jpg

Not my urine sample. Should be blue color
    IMG_20190315_173052.jpg
Alas, they could not be saved.
They both leak at the MC/lever with a nice sucking sound...

Came off this bike. First thing I looked for was cracks. These Ravens had a tendency to break.

We have a cracked Raven upstairs at the shop. It is a cool blue/black models, would be a cool wall hanger.

Did you guys warranty it? While I haven't had any issues with my Race Face cranks, the incident is definitely not without precedent.

    No shıt!
We had a guy come in and his wheels were black from oil. We asked him what happened,
"My brakes were making a real bad noise so I poured some oil on them, and sprayed them with WD-40 too. Now they don't work too good..."

You get a lot of interesting parts from Germany :) I used to hang out in Freiburg. It is a great old cathedral city at the south end of the Black Forest. I don't normally think of it as an engineering/machining center.

I believe anything nowadays. One of my friends (with a $300K household income) thought using USED chainsaw oil to lube his chain was a good idea, that is until he went on his first dusty ride. It was the worst looking, non rusted chain I 'd ever seen.

Awesome!! My daughter moves to Germany on Thursday for a minimum 3 years and we'll be going at least 3 weeks per year. This place is going on the list. I love the architecture and "village" atmosphere of towns like this.

No, he just bought new ones. If you read the reviews on that model, they seem to break a lot.

I don't know of any oil that will gunk up a bicycle chain worse than chainsaw oil. Don't ask how I know that. . . .
