A friend of mine that works is a shop in the midwest is a wrench in a shop, and comes across all manner of . . . . 'issues' that folks drop off to be repaired. He posts them on his FB page as #bikeshophorrors. Personally, I find them to be infinitely entertaining, and maybe even helpful in that I am often on the lookout for things that don't seem to be quite right.

Sometimes I see them in places like craigslist ads, or out in the wild.

At any rate, I thought it would be fun to share the ones we actually come across in person. So. I'll get it started with one that isn't especially heinous, but you get the idea.

This one came to us from the good folks over at Sport Chalet. Once they announced they were going out of business, we were getting folks dropping off their bikes they bought on clearance and wanted us to give 'em a quick once over. . . . . .

I worked at Sport Chalet and our store was notorious for hiring kids who had no clue how to work on a bike. More than once did in have to train a kid how to assemble a bike. This included putting Santa Cruz bikes together.

There's a few great threads on Fbook...

    Is one such site.

Regrettably, there are some of us who see these all too often in the age of home assembly of internet-ordered Pinarello's and YT's.

Used to work for a Santa Cruz dealer.

Here are 2.....wish I would have taken pics.

    1. Up to 2002, the SC Bullit only have swing arm clearance for 6" rotors. In 2003 they updated to 8" rotors. Customer brings his Bullit in because there was a creak. While inspecting the swing arm, noticed that the recess for the rotor was really beat up and there was a crack. Call the customer and ask him about the swing arm...."yeah, I wanted to run an 8" rotor so just made it fit with a hammer. Best part is SC replaced it under No Fault Crash Replacement.

    2. Same shop. Customer rolls in this hideous DH contraption. This is the early 2000's and DH bikes only have about 6" of travel. Couldn't identify the frame or the fork. Start asking the customer about the bike. Customer says he needed a DH bike with 10" of travel, he built his own. Not from the frame up. He took a Dirtworks Pirahna, boxes in the whole front triangle with gusset plates. Long Moto Shock on the rear and garage made links. Since forks were no available at that travel, again made his own out of some aluminum tubes and a couple of springs. Bottom bracket had to be 16" off the ground. He looked very disappointed when the non heat treated gusset plates cracked the front triangle.

I have some gems buried in my hard drive. I'll see if I can find some...

Then again, I am covering for the manager at Temple City Bike shop for the next 5 days, so I'm sure I'll see something new.

Customer leaves a bike for some work. I notice that the left brake/shift unit is loose. 5mm in hand, I go to tighten it up, and I get this

    2017-08-18 20.34.25.jpg

But the shifter won't turn on the bar either, wtf?
Oh, I see, customer mod extraordinaire!

    2017-08-18 20.34.47.jpg

Freakin genius I tell ya! Over tighten the clamp bolt till the clamp fails, then use a sheet metal screw "secure" it to the bar!

    Off the bike....

    2017-08-18 20.35.43.jpg

Talked them into a new brake/shift unit but they wouldn't replace the bar

"It's your teeth." Was my parting comment.

What did they even bring the bike in for? "In for some work" is a bit vague. I get the impression that they don't seen to be the typical LBS customer.

I dunno, I love these redneck jobs done all in the name of saving money, and avoiding the consumerism trap of disposable commodities. This Sh!t is now vintage 1-of-a-kind modded craigslist-tier craft. If it "works", then use it. If it breaks, well, bring it to the no-cost "expert" to fix it up. I'm sure they have a redneck method of handling busted teeth too; though it doesn't seem too effective, judging by the gaps in their teeth, but it still "works" for eating I suppose. Not much seems to stop them from having fun (recklessly). 'Murica!

That's exactly what this was. The customer bought a beat up Trek Marlin hardtail on Craigslist-"It was a great deal!"
Dented and scratched, both wheels out of true, hanger bent, rear tire skidded to the threads, seat heavily modified with shopping bags and duct tape...and of course the shifter mod.
New shifter, cables, housing, tune-up, tires/tubes and over $200 later the great deal ended up costing him more than a new entry level Hardrock. And he kept the seat-said it was actually comfortable!

You see the wackiest things when you work at a bike shop. I saw a fork that was spray painted black...including the stanchions. There was also a customer that sprayed WD-40 on their derailleur. The entire derailleur was caked with dirt.

Oh yeah man! That's why I keep coming back. It sure ain't for the money!

WD-40 in the wrong hands, wrong application, can wreak havoc upon a poor bicycle.

When I was a kid, I sprayed WD-40 on my 20" tires (5-speed huffy) and sparked them up befor rolling down Barbara's driveway in my neighborhood.
