Very cool @mike. Didn't know they were out in the wild in the SAs. A few weeks ago we visited the Big Bear Zoo/Sanctuary. They had a Golden and Bald Eagle (in the same pen). Amazing to see them close and how large and beautiful and majestic they are. BTW, the BB operation rehabs and releases back to wild all the animals that are able. Most of the ones at the zoo have issues that don't allow them to fend for themselves in the wild. The grizzlies were pretty awesome to see too.

This year's offspring, same nest and moma but a different dad. The kids are around a month old since hatching. Already a foot tall and those clown feet, holy cow!

The chicks got banded yesterday. Here is a vid of the bioligist who climbed up the tree and handled them. Two big boys!

Think mama lost one to the elements. Same thing happened last year when a late season snow storm hit. Hope that isn't the case.

No, it's still alive but I doubt it should be rolled over on it's back like that.

Nature in yer face can be harsh for sure. We usually don't get to see such things as this (though one chick died last year too). I heard mortality rate is %50+ for eaglets under 1 year.

Sad to see. Unthinkable naturally-occurring suffering happens in the wild beyond our view. That it's necessary for the survival of a species doesn't help our emotions much.

I do not believe that animals know "suffering" the way we do. They simply do not have the brains to be as "conscious" and "in touch" as we are. I feel that they exist somewhere between that and functioning on instinct.

Generally speaking, wild animals seem to lose the battle fairly fast. I feel that this Mother Nature's way of limiting "suffering" in the animal kingdom.

Imagine how any Bald Eagles there would be if every single chick survived and lived a full life. You'd have them on your roof, on your handlebars, on your shower door, on your shopping cart, on your windshield wipers,...

Nature is the perfect formula for life. Loss is part of the equation.

They grow up so fast. At 100 days old our baby eagle friend took flight today for the first time!
