Can other bells be turned on, off, and also be rung on demand like that one? Like.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s fun to turn your bell on when you’re tailgating one of your buddies down the trail? Always seems to up the entertainment even when you’re not that close:Roflmao...

Ross we had a name for that bell when we were up at Snow Summit that day, remember? I have one of those (from Ross) on Cathy’s bike. She loves it.

I have an Awareness Bell on my Hightower. It’s all stainless steel with a stainless steel spring and cnc’ed clacker. The clacker has groves cut in it that you pull it and the spring down to clutch the side of the bell. Simple pull, pulls it loose and Hails Bails!

So silent running stealth mode when desired, and bombing warning on the descents. I have been thanked way too many times to ever pull the bell off my bike. I’m not saying I love listening to it, to be honest, I actually forget I have it ringing. But the trail advocacy I get from it is a big bonus. Especially when I stop and talk to folks and they find out I run a mountain bike forum. I get plenty of thanks.

I can also say in all honesty, on trails like McGill I have used my bell going up and down. My bell has prevented plenty of head on collisions with other bikers.

Bells are a win win for me.

People wearing earbuds when they hike are absolutely beyond me. I thought hiking was to get away from the noise of the city, not bring the noise with them. I’m always nice, but they get less from me.

I think I just figured out why I always ride alone. I have TWO bells on my bike. One is ALWAYS on and the other can be turned on/off. Most of the time I don’t even notice it. I’ve been running a bell for as long as I can remember and will never stop. I’ll be sure to install a 3rd one if I ever get a chance to ride with @kazlx
I used to wear one earbud religiously. Only stopped cause the music player died on me and I’m to cheap to replace it.
To me there are two types of trail users. Those that are aware and those that are not. And most the time it’s pretty easy to tell them apart from a distance.

I use an awareness bell as enlightened self interest. I cannot tell you the number of times with my bell tinkling away, I've come around a turn to find happy hikers gladly out of my way - far before I would have seen them. Makes me happy. Makes them happy. And I get thanked. Yes, the sound is annoying to me, but a clear trail is a happy trail, and happy hikers keep those trails open to bikes.

Hey if i'm gonna lug it along I'm gonna use it...:p
In all seriousness though I think a bell is pretty much mandatory equipment. I cant imagine bombing down some of the out and back trails we do without a bell. Trails like Golden Eagle, McGill and Boyscout that are 2 way trails and can be used by more than just mountain bikers I just wouldn't be comfortable without a bell. I've had many thank me for my bell and can't say I remember anybody ever giving me crap for it. Even though I have the timber bell I think the awareness bell is the way to go, it just sounds right.

I think most of you know I use a Timberbell.:p
And like many have already said, it’s nice to have the hikers move off trail before you even get close:thumbsup:
Most of the time I can tune the bell out, but there are times when it annoys me a little:gotnothing:

Maybe I missed something, but isn't the timber bell by default an awareness bell?
But yeah, I use my timber bell, the sound is pleasant and typically don't notice it anymore.

I have been riding the margins for the longest time. The funny thing about bells you cannot hear them on incoming bikes, but can easily hear them as they depart. I believe it is a doppler effect since bells are low frequency sound. The only time I hear them in advance is on the switchbacks and that is when they are two or more above me. I find riding with my vision pays best and I try to carry climbing corners on the inside. I make a conscious effort to always be on the inside of climbing corners, and a few weeks ago that saved me from a head on with a downhill speeder, we kissed but did not strike. Fast riders always are on the outside of the turn. But my main defense is riding when most riders are gone. The trails are empty and I own the night. I am the last truck at the trail head 90% of the time.
Happy stealthy climbs on empty trails

My bell doesn't have a name, but if it did, it'd be Michelle... my belle. And she only tinkles when needs must.

Haha, my local venue last winter.

When I think CO, I think outdoor culture and areas, and mostly, it has that. But the Front Range around Denver is a sh¡thole. It's a beautiful place that's been ruined by entitled users – by their sheer numbers, their dog sh¡t, their trash and their attitude. The funny sign wars are an outgrowth of that.

Bells are great, when the other trail users don't have their earbuds deep into their (so-called) brains. I use mine when I remember.
