Formulating a desired taste out of beer = science. Only interest I have in the stuff. Interesting to see how some brews are aged in old used bourbon barrels, to try infuse more flavor depth into it.

I personally am not a fan of anything bitter. Any color that reminds me of piss turn me off too. I'm a sipper, not a gulper. I tend to like the garnishes better than the actual drink, like lemons, limes, citric acid along the rim of the glass, novelty ice cubes, etc. Can't even drink energy drinks, hot coffee, or hot tea... still have my kid taste buds I guess, minus the sweet tooth.

Your taste buds must be destroyed from too many hoppy beers.

Then again, New Castle tastes like boricha (보리차) to me... which is an "AZN" barley tea... which almost tastes like water.

I'll stick with my Coors Light shandy and/or Tecate michelada.

Can't understand all the IPA hate. It's really all I drink these days. and I'm with ya there Weezy. There are some really good beer choices in a can nowadays. In fact, I think I will grab a tall boy of Dale's Pale Ale on the way home to take on my ride tonight. For me I have become really fond of beers made with Citra hops. One of the best I have had was recent trip to Pizza Port and tried the Citra-Rama, but that may be because I had it after my weekend long bikepacking trip. I like the crisp, hoppy, light citrus and bitter flavors myself. :D

I miss pizza port. Back in the day, they'd have 10 cent wings and cheese sticks on Wednesday nights. During my enlistment they increased the price to 25 cents which was too expensive for my salary.

Decisions, decisions. This could cause a serious dilemma when pennies are short.

I've yet to try the 805. Reminds me of a freeway, but I think I'll have to give it a shot.

    Which one did I pick???
Tough choice but I did go for the 805! Not a freeway, but it is the Area Code of the location of the main brewery.

Filipino QC on the beer is apparently somewhat spotty.

The native San Miguel or Red Horse brews were very, very good - amplified I'm sure by the unholy humidity and heat in those islands - but the effects were all over the map. This was not a scientific experiment by any stretch of the imagination, but I distinctly remember on one occasion drinking 12 (or maybe more - I was much younger then and it was a long time ago) San Miguels over the course of 5 or 6 hours one evening in beautiful downtown Olongapo City, getting up from the table, and walking back to the ship no worse for the wear.

On another occasion, I had three over the course of maybe an hour and a half, stood up, and promptly face-planted. They were much stronger than the previous batch. Now, I suppose that could have been due to the relative lack of pancit and lumpia.

As an aside, I will note here that it was not possible for me to be drunk enough to try balut.

You just can't do that kinda stuff here in the states.

I agree with your assessments of the beers you list, but to jump from those to IPA- hoppiness makes no sense. There are a million awesome beers that balance hoppiness without going off the deep end that makes you feel like you are licking a sweater.

    I agree 100%.

Chimay, Red Horse, San Miguel, Pacifico, Negra Modelo, Guinness, Bass (or Guinness AND Bass - "Black and Tan"), et cetera. There are great beers out there that are not IPAs. But I like IPAs too.

Drinking my first 805 because Mikie talks about them all the time. Very quaffable beer. Refreshing, yet not tasteless swill like Buttweiper or Pabst smear.

To my radically trendy and tragically hip brethren (and sister-en), I apologize that it's not an IPA. I will make up for it by belching loudly.

I'm drinking one right now after my second bike ride of the day. This one involved my wife on her beach cruiser and my daughter on her training wheel bike going around the sidewalks and paths in the neighborhood. STRAVA stats - 1.63 miles. 47'' of elevation gain.

Ooops, this is no longer a beer post, it's a ride report. Back to the thread...

This 805 is tasty, yet un-spectacular.
