I'm making a return of sorts to MTBs after shifting to road bikes in about '03. I've been riding strictly for fitness since then and decided that offroad would be a good way to expand riding opportunities beyond SoCal pavement that might as well be rocky gravel anyway.

Against all advice from every forum post ever made since 2005, I grabbed a '98 Specialized FSR Comp because it was an XL (I'm '6'4"), I like it, it looks cool, and I used most of the budget this past week on a new road bike(which is a story in itself).

    So hi!

Welcome aboard!!! You'll take sh!t on the roadie stuff, but I'm one of those also so who cares.

Fitness is good. Riding bikes is gooder. Tell us about your rides when you do them. Don't be a slacker and don't just lurk.

Welcome back! And nothing wrong with the bike you selected. Specialized make great bikes even if most of us hate the company. o_O

Like Mark said - don’t hold back on riding or writing. In fact, you don’t even need to ride. Just write about it! :D

    Thanks for the welcome everyone!

That's okay. I can dish it out and therefore have to be able to take it.

I don't love 'em either., but the bike is so old that at least they didn't benefit directly from me buying it.

I'll hike the trails pushing a front fork with a stem and bars so it looks like I'm riding in the pictures...

Not sure yet. There is apparently a 16mi loop in the ANF nearby that I've seen part of.

    If we see a 6.4" kitted mtnbkr on a 98 Fsr we'll know it's Agent-Orange without asking. In your defense I have a 91-Stumpy
On loan currently and told my friend if it comes up missing "I'll kill you" he said ok ok Jeepers. Some old school advice.
((DO NOT)) ride any up-to-date bikes until your considering a change. Hay Bob can I try your Niner-jet-9? Don't do it.
Welcome aboard, this place is cool..

“Against all the advice from the internet from the last 20 years”

so....I’ll remember that next time you come around asking for advice....I’ll just save my breath.

Reformed Roadie.....if that’s what floats yer boat. At least you know yet place...a roadie or a mtn biker....not a can’t make up my mind gravel guy.

personally, I’m a mountain biker.....but occasionally ride the road to get to the dirt, then sometimes a bit more roadie to get to even more dirt, before returning to the road to get to yet more dirt...no pizza cutters for me though.

    Thanks!

Wait, you've been making fun of me?

Thanks! And yes...well, they used to be. The one on the wall of my folks' house kinda is.

I didn't ask for advice; other people did.

By the way, what would be a good way to convert my FSR to 29s and discs? I still have about $60 leftover. The Avid v-brakes are great and I'd like to keep them if possible. Or what about 27.5s? Are those better than 650Bs? I don't want to go metric if I can avoid it.

I'm with you....this is unacceptable. Nigh on revolution-worthy. The peasants will soon storm the gates, pitchforks and rails in hand.

    Tar is boiling....

And just to use the edit button while it's still available, this may belong in the Forum forum.

I've heard that some idiots put a 27.5" on the back and a 29er on the front. Or is it a 650 b and 700 c? Either way, they are morons!

I can take that a step further with the 26" disc brake rear wheel I just found in storage!

Alright, I'll start looking for another FSR Comp frame. What about the seat though? It's higher than the bars.
