"The Pedalhead has been confidence bolstering, and the 29×2.6 Rekons seem ideal. I do miss my dropper post : /" @mike from the blog.

I was just looking at my rear touring rack and panniers this morning. Free up that seat post, and free up your mind! UPS is your friend?

Thanks for posting the blog link. I met up with @mike just before launch for a brew over in Mesa. Stoke was high. I'll have to play catch up over the weekend.

The AZTR officially kicked off y'day morning and I was supposed to be riding my arse off as I type this, but a pesky Achilles flare up has me sidelined for a little while. In the meantime, I shuttled Neil B. down to the start and then drove all over southern AZ y'day, 11 hours worth, dropping vehicles at Picketpost TH for some 300 riders, and back to Tucson to drop off a friend, etc. Endurance driving!! They are some amazing rides unfolding RIGHT NOW, check out the tracker: Trackleaders.com/aztr18

Here's my photo dump from Wed. evening down at Parker Canyon Lake (start of the 300) and the start y'day morning. I can't believe I have to set an early alarm for tomorrow to go fetch Neil. That's just stoopid fast. He's within reach of Kurt's record setting time of 45 hours 7 minutes. He needs to finish before 5:07a tomorrow. 43 tough miles remain.

Meanwhile, Kurt is on record pace to beat Neil's 750 time!! And Kaitlyn is going to smash the female record in the 300. G'night....

Hey guys, sorry for the gap but I somehow lost a juicy post from Patagonia, so I’m playing catch up. If I don’t try, I simply won’t recall the details.

@schillingsworth, damn, buddy, what a pisser! Thanks for helping out the riders! Not sure if I’m more entertained by them than they of me. Everyone assumes I’m racing, so it’s with great joy that I state I’m on the leisure program. One old guy asked me to help keep him calm LOL!!!!!!! Two others blew up first day, sounds like fun. Luckily I won’t be enlisting is such self destruction...I simply couldn’t hack it, even if I trained.

Today and tomorrow are mid 90s in Gila R. That’s too hot for me. The weez demands two days off here in Kearny, but we’ll see.

@SnakeCharmer , what ya gonna ride? Endless flow down by Gabe Zimmerman? User friendly! Buddy, had to think about you dumping those fat Recons...I could not imagine a better (existing) tire for this duty!

I’ll put up more on the blog today. Thanks to all you for being a source of inspiration for this gigantic chore, haha!!!!!! Bikes bikes BIKES!

Is the weez riding with you? 95* highs...ouch. Looks like cooler temps Thurs/Fri/Sat which should get you through to Apache Junction. Are you trying to ride as much AZ trail as possible or diverting onto parts of the race route? Beyond Picketpost you can go up Reavis Canyon but that would become more nuts than going up Bugs and require backtracking. Green has climbing both directions but would be steep in places going up. At least its mostly in the trees though. Good call bypassing it.

What's the plan for Kelvin to Picketpost? There is some great camping by the river or a couple miles further up from it. Leave Kelvin Weds around 4pm and you'd get 18mi to the river in daylight. That whole segment was just rebuilt last year and rides well heading west. Then up the climb from the river early next morning and you'd top out before it heats up. The race route has a good diversion from Picketpost over to Gold Canyon trails.

...and the road becomes my bride
I have stripped of all but pride
So in her I do confide
    And she keeps me satisfied
    Gives me all I need

...and with dust in throat I crave
    Only knowledge will I save
To the game you stay a slave

    Rover, wanderer
    Nomad, vagabond
    Call me what you will

But I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
    And I'll redefine anywhere

    Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

...and the earth becomes my throne
    I adapt to the unknown
    Under wandering stars I've grown
    By myself but not alone
    I ask no one

...and my ties are severed clean
The less I have the more I gain
Off the beaten path I reign

    Rover, wanderer
    Nomad, vagabond
    Call me what you will

But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
    And I'll never mind anywhere

    Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind
And I'll take my find anywhere

    Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
    And I'll redefine anywhere

    Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home

    Carved upon my stone
My body lies but still I roam

    Wherever I may roam
    Wherever I may roam
    Wherever I may roam
    Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may wander, wander, wander
    Wherever I may roam

I knew there had to be a purist in the group calling blasphemy on my strawberry Newtons. Blueberry and strawberry all they had!

That 95-degree day turned out to not have teetth. I sat mesmerized by the deep water until a cowboy crossed on his horse, not even getting the animal’s belly wet. Do you know where the sandbar runs, ev???? You seem to know every other damn detail about every ride everyone posts. :geek::cool:

I think it runs from the far side visible in the pic, diagonal across the river to the left out of sight and approaching the near bank maybe 100ft upstream.

Water was clearer when we did the Gila bikepack in Feb so you could kinda see it.

The only time I've crossed it, I waded at that little inlet in the pic, which is the normal crossing spot. It was ballz deep there. Surprisingly sharp gravel on the river bed. Seems to move though. There were two channels that day which I had never seen before.

Interesting decision to hike down Bright Angel instead of staying on the AZT along the S. Kaibab trail. BA is longer and will have more hikers. Either way, the Canyon trek is a slog, murder on the shoulders....

Also, I bet he'll be in the clear when he reaches the North Rim since he's not carrying a SPOT tracker or the like. The last few racers this year were greeted by a not-so friendly park ranger who made them take the snow covered trail instead of the road to exit the park. I'd love to hear the rational behind that. Seems like a lone wolf with a grudge against bikers...

Haha, John, I saw the the sign once I finished the spin out the Park. Poaching pavement LOL
Bright A was good, not too hard on the knees and lots of water en route.

Just hit Jacob Lake, so I’ll be done tomorrow. I’ll update my blog today and try to get pix in there, sorry J.

Ho man. Altered state. 22.5 miles to freedom. Or is it captivity? I don’t know. More research may be needed.

Right on!! As Evan noted in another forum the irony of mountain bikers wanting to ride the road at that stage of the route and the park rangers wanting them to ride singletrack!! It's rather mind boggling.

Enjoy the final 29 miles to Stateline today. Some of my favorite miles on the AZT. Hopefully it's all dry up there, if not, watch out for death mud when you pop out of the trees near Gov't Reservoir!! Brutal. Soak up that final descent into Utah!!

"Holy HAB, @mike!" I gotta believe all your big wall approach/gear hauling experience helped with that GC traverse. Otherwise, wow, that must be an awkward 50-60 lb. (or more?) load with a huge amount of elevation change that most riders wouldn't be ready for, or even capable of. Especially when you know you could've coasted half of it.. Way to stay true to the course and job well done.:bang::cool:

Jim, you’re a wise man. You know damn well I was drawing on every past hump from hell and cargo beat-down to keep it together in the Canyon. You also know there’s an art to suffering, and artists get better with practice.

    Thanks for the good words!

I got back to Flag this AM thanks to the karmic vortex of the trail. Blog updated. Grand Slam breakfast consumed. Remaining travel logistics mostly slayed. With any luck, I’ll be nicely drunk by the time my 3:30 shuttle shows up.

I’ll have lots to say about the ride and route, but right now I gotta just “bask in the glory,” as we wall rats say.

    Ride on, friends.
