So I had a fun time at the SDMBA Archipelago ride. Was a little worried the 6200 feet of climbing would be tough for me, but I felt great at the finish aside from my first case of really bad ass rash. Funny, I did two days of bike packing with the same shorts and liner without issue, but Archipelago left my ass cheeks with raw rub marks. Don't know what went wrong, but will have to maybe try pure spandex on my next long ride and/or bringing and applying more butt-butter during the ride. park by park RR: La Costa I felt worried. Jim, the leader in our small group of friends was going out strong and powering up all the climbs with speed, standing and mashing as needed, passing many slower riders. NO WAY I could keep this pace up all day! lots of chunky switch backs went by quickly and before I knew it we were descending back down the other side into the overgrown creek trail. Sweat was already dripping from my helmet every time I put my head down, but thankfully the day was filled with a nice intermittent cool breeze. Elfin forest at this point I was warmed up and legs were feeling stronger. This would be my first time on "The Way UP" trail, and I must brag as I am proud of the accomplishment: I managed to clean the entire thing regardless of the conga line of people pushing and mass of hiker traffic. I got lucky and I got behind the one guy who knew all the lines and was able to match pace. Once at the top of Elfin, sweat poured like rivers down my arms. What happened to that breeze? Hodges went by quickly. easy flats until we hit the Lusardi connector to Black Mountain which was some pretty awesome riding. I had never been here before and I was really impressed with the miles of new single track that SDMBA has been building. Had an amazing margarita shot at the "un-official" aid station and the guy in the grass skirt was yelling "YOU ARE ALL F@cked!!!" to all the riders as they showed up looking for water. It was about Black Mountain and mile 30 something when my ass started complaining. I told it to shut up, and continued on. Legs and body feel great, don't need to hear it from my ass. Finally rolling up on los penasquitos around 40 mile mark my ass was really not happy. and now my slight rant about the event: I was just wanting to finish so I started breaking away from my pack of friends and I got to a unmarked intersection. Well, I went the wrong way of course and rode an extra 30-45 min until I got back on track. If you are not going to share a GPX file for the riders of an event it sure as hell needs better course markers!!!! OK... so almost 7 hours later of sweaty ass chaffing, and I MUST get off this F-ing bike and get a cold beer. Finally found some fellow riders and made the final climb up to Green Flash brewing. Went in the bathroom and applied toilet paper to my wounds. Got my burger and enjoyed some fantastic beer. Great people, great event. just need better course markings and next time more ass lube!

This looks like such a great ride/event! Thanks for the pics of it!

Any guesses as to whether the heat and extra ass-sweat from said heat caused the problem?

I'm thinking it was a combo: the seat has a bit of upturn at the tail end (going to try a different seat), maybe not enough butt butter, and just lots of sweat with shorts and liner. It wasn't the sit bone area but higher up. like the perimeter of the pad in the liner. maybe the stitching? I have done 50+ mile rides before and not had a problem so I'm not 100% sure why it happened. It may have been lack of butter since I only really applied to sit bone area and didn't really think about higher up.

sorry about TMI and no I wont post any pics.

Maybe you should have worn something else between rides, or at least washed them!

    Great job, despite the ass-fault.

Firstly, GREAT RIDE REPORT AND PICS!

    Secondly,
I just rode the Kokopelli and my azz is just fine (150 Off Road miles),

In 2013, I did waaayyyyy more training and started out using butt butter and ended up hating it so much I gave a large tube away for free! Oh! And my azz was miserable!

2012, I trained hard, no butt butter and walked away from the ride in miserable azz pain!

IMHO, I think it simply comes down to a great pair of shorts with a great chamois, a seat that fits you, and hours in the saddle and never using a butter.

I'm telling you this really sucks! :( I guess I shouldn't be riding my bike for a while until it heals up. It's not a typical saddle sore, I have had something like that before. This is actual rubbed off skin middle of my ass cheeks from rubbing and sweat. I have never had anything like it. it's like two half dollar sized pieces of my skin stuck to the shorts liner when I took it off. Must be the dammed seat and the massive amount of sweat and time spent sitting and pedaling up the hills.

I can't ride on a regular seat anymore! I wear a decent liner, and haven't had an issue like yours since I started a few years ago.

I be puttin' my money on the 'swamp booty' (and a chamois not wicking away the moisture) being the major issue with your tissue.

Major 'pimp-hand' you've got going on there by telling it to "shut up". LOL :~D

Nice ride report. Asstoundingly good read!

This is a fun ride I try to do or volunteer at every year. Lots of people I only see at this event every year.

In all fairness to the organizers they have big problems with hikers taking down the flags they hang up. They flag the high use areas like Penasquitos the day before but without fail a bunch are always disappear the morning of the event. Happens in more remote sections too. Not sure why they don't provide gps but it would be easy enough to find one online.

I missed this earlier – nice ride and report!

FWIW, I've had the same ass issue; chafing well outside of the pressure/friction area from a sweaty, long ride. I Chamois Butt'r that area and haven't had the issue since. Just a little bit works for me.

About the biggest Gopher snake I have seen! What the hell are they doing out so early? Nice report! Stay off the bike or you will be going in to get a hole sewn up and you will be down for a month! And yes a new saddle and shorts are in order!
