This re-route is great for us who never did the rock up-step (pretty much everyone).

I was getting close, then they closed the trail...

Is the re-route going to make it so you don't have to dismount?

Paved would be better than gravel, IMO. I'll see if I can't get detailed info from the Ranger.

Agreed. I guess I meant: "Paved/gravel instead of dirt?! Bummer."

I have no idea what they could do unless it was completely different line. Right now the problem is that it goes straight down, then straight up. You pave that, and the first time it rains you are going to have riders (and walkers) down all over the place. I have always wondered if they could take a less direct route..

I like that little trail the way it is, just cleaned up so it's not all rutted (to the point where people are getting hurt). Doesn't bother me to HAB up something I can't ride.. I actually find it humbling and inspiring.

Well... I didn't want to come out and say this, but I own all four houses that abut that trail, and I don't like riffraff in my backyard. Particularly sweaty riffraff.

That sucks... One more section of fun trail eliminated for my protection. F- that!

PS - I loaned you some apostrophes. There were many left over from the people who use them for plurals instead of contractions or possession. :sneaky: ;) :whistling:

They're turning the trail into a 8' path with stairs up and stairs down at the steep sections. There appears to be a bike riding trail next to the stairs. At the top it will be crushed stone. Curb on one side, pole fence on the other. Tree landscaping. Specific detailed plans here:

    http://lagunabeachcity.net/civicax/inc/blobfetch.aspx?BlobID=15924

Trail will follow more or less the exact same line it currently does, though it appears the rock step will be removed.

For what it's worth, this trail is 100% on Laguna Beach property.

ZOMG if that is a flat bike trail straight down one side and straight up the other it will be a rocket slide! Contour profile:

Let's just be glad they left a bike trail. When I was reading the background documentation, much of the justification for the project came from the fact that families use that trail spur to walk their kids to school.

Two things that have me concerned:

    (1) The bike path will be from 8' wide to 4' wide (at the narrowest points where there are stairs and they are planting four trees) and will be on the INSIDE of the stairs (opposite of the way it is now).
    (2) I am assuming they will allow you to ride your bike on it. I read some disquieting notes about the bike path being there to allow riders to walk their bikes while they themselves were on the stairs. 4' isn't a very wide bike path.

And I didn't realize - the reason why the trail follows that narrow line is that there is an existing 10' road easement there. The lot next to the trail (which I thought belonged to the city) is actually private property that just hasn't been developed.

Amen to protecting the easement! Thank you City of Laguna Beach!

From a practical/ multi-use point-of-view, I'd suggest reducing the elevation drop/gain to reduce bike speed relative to pedestrian, and widening the bike tread footprint. That would allow us to roll through there safely while reducing potential user conflicts.

I was leaning more toward an open-air, thistle-powered Maglev system to whisk humans and domesticated animals back and forth whilst enjoying the cool ocean breezes. But it looks like they've already got a plan.

Update article in the Orange County Register

Quote: "mountain bikers buzz by kids playing on the narrow street".

I have ridden that trail for over 10 years, all days of the week and all times of the year, and have never seen a kid on it, ever. Are people really suggesting their kids are out there playing ball? And their primary concern is mountain bikers - versus cars?

Another guy is quoted as saying mountain bikers cause congestion that would prevent people from evacuating in the case of a fire. Wow.

Rode it a couple times this weekend otw to Meadows - Friday and Sunday. The whole trail is now graded flat so it's pretty easy to ride down, but kinda loose on the way up. There was tape across the entrance on Friday, but it had been re-positioned on Sunday so you could ride right in. Don't know how long it'll be rideable as construction progresses...

Yeah what a bunch of bs. Kids playing in the street isn't really a thing in Laguna. The people quoted are just playing nimby.

Also, even if many ride over to meadows, everybody parks at the other end of Alta Laguna where's there's ample street parking and a parking lot that doesn't bottleneck a neighborhood. Redoing the connector trail won't by itself increase the number of people riding in the park, it's not like we couldn't access the trail previously.

Which other trail, the one in the second Lopes video? Hopefully not...seems like they're only doing work in Aliso.

Oh God - they better not touch that other trail... Only the few who have been maintaining that trail for 20 years (and those of similar investment) should be allowed to continue to do so.
