Add me to the list of this week's injuries.
    IMG_2487.JPG

At first, I thought it was just a sprain but soon noticed that the foot didn't feel right moving it side-to-side. I went home to put away the bike and had the wife take me to an urgent care.

Right behind the big Tibia bone is a twisted Fibula break above the ankle or that's how the doctor explained it.
    ankle break-1 (2).jpg

I need to call the Ortho Monday morning for an appointment.
On one of those fracture boot thingamajigs and just R.I.C.E. for now.
I only wish it was the left foot, now I can't even drive!!!:bang::bang::cry::cry::facepalm::facepalm:

Rookies heavy sigh... Put your right leg on the passenger seat (glom the couch pillow if you must). Now your brain can not confuse

Thanks for all the tips on how to drive with the left foot. I think it needs practice to get use to the amount of gas and brake one needs to modulate. Either I'm not going to stop in time and hit someone or slam on the brakes and get hit from behind, lol!

@mtnbikej I didn't want to include where but it was Aliso. Let's just say when I saw my ankle turn into a cankle on that trail I said to myself, "Holy Macaroni".

    1. That's a lot better than wondering what happened and having to ask someone.

    2. Driving. If you have a touchy/throttle "you'll see" since you're being careful you will notice others around you drive like
Inconsiderate idiots, and by the time you make it to the corner you'll have it wired. Rest up.

Renting this little contraption pretty much saved my job…I can’t work from home, and commuting from Orange to LAX every day wasn’t happening any other way. For me, the muscle memory worked better than using the left foot on the regular pedal, and if you’re in traffic 2.5 hours a day, comfort is essential.

it ships quickly and was like $150 for 6 weeks.

I got an appointment with Orthopedic doctor tomorrow. I'll keep ya'll posted.
I went from PPO to HMO to save some bucks and totally regret it.
Talk about the extra steps and authorizations needed just to get it checked out.
I'm going back to PPO the next time it's offered. You live and learn I guess.

You already had it checked out. They found a crack, they should have wheeled you over to the casting room then get the crutches.
They're padding the bill at the expense of your health. Scumbags

I brought my own crutches I had at home when I walked in to urgent care. They only provided me a horse pill Ibuprofen and a CAM ankle brace and an x-ray copy to take to the Ortho.
After that it was a piece of paper they handed to me with a 1-800 number I had to call to see the Ortho. Called that number and they want me to call my In-Network doctor for authorization. Called my In-Network doctor and they will send the paperwork along with a number to call the Ortho for an appointment. Funny thing is that the paper with the 1-800 number has at the bottom *PPO Patients do not require referral for specialist care, lol!
I want to make sure the crutches I brought from home or anything else funny is not tacked on when I see the bill.

Wow! Leaving California, I lost Kaiser and my company only offers Anthem Blue Shield where I’m at now and I hate it. It’s a PPO. Kaiser has so many doctors in their HMO network making a network choice was no big deal. A $20 co-pay was a whole lot better than my now $1500 deductible. Anthem does not hold a candle to Kaiser as far as affordability. The only major disappointment leaving California so far…

My double knee replacement cost me like $40 bucks. :gotnothing:

I will never relinquish my WOOD crutches. No tap-tap noise every step you take. And you can't get charged for them!

On "Little house on the prairie" you bring the DR. an Apple Pie and the DR. fixes your leg. Those days are clearly gone.

So you're saying socialized medicine - run well - is way better than the more common American model. :whistling:  . Frankly, I had no complaints about Kaiser the short time I was Kaiser-dized. Although I never had any major surgery or severe illness. Some stitches. A broken hand. Routine check ups. Viagra prescriptions. The usual.

I know a lot of people who swear by Kaiser. No complicated bills to try to understand and no billing surprises are big selling points. It seems they’ve found enough of doctors who actually prefer being employees vs being entrepreneurs.

All I’m saying is it was what my company offered as a Health provider and this fixed all my broken for a fair price. A percentage of cash was pulled from my paycheck each pay period and the company paid a sweet portion as well.

I’d guess that easily 50% of the police dept had Kaiser back when I was working even though there were probably 5 options. I’m sure 90% of that was because it was the cheapest by a long shot. Most people were totally happy with Kaiser and never left. Plenty still have it in retirement.

The one year I had Kaiser, the steps needed to get a vasectomy were a nightmare. Plus, the ONE location they had to get it done was 50 miles from my house. Recently, I had a retired friend who had pancreatic cancer and Kaiser basically cut him off from services saying “we’ve done all we can do”. I’m not sure if that’s normal protocol but I know a bunch of people were shocked (and pissed).

I’ve been lucky for the last 24 years that my wife has worked for a biotech that prioritizes healthcare so we’ve had a PPO for almost free. I’m not looking forward to paying for that coverage this Fall.

You can go with an HMO and deal with a bit of extra attention to detail, and have a $20 copay....

Or you can go with a PPO and have more flexibility, but have to fork over 10% of the bill.

In our case, if we'd been on a PPO we'd have shelled out more than $12,000 for my wife's 2 knee replacements (which were done at St Jude Fullerton). Because it was done under the HMO we'd paid about $120 total upfront, a tad more in premiums over the years. But not that much. In the near future we'd pony up another $6K - $8K when I have to get a valve job.

So I have to spend a few minutes ensuring the paperwork is in order? Okay.

I had a vasectomy at Kaiser ages ago. I don't recall any onerous requirements. Made the appointment, showed up, snip snip. Done.

I went in to see the Ortho on Wednesday. He told me that the top of the distal fibula shaft (outer ankle ball) was fractured. Only concern is that it has moved inward almost touching the Tibula.
Options is to have it heal on its own with a likelihood of having problems down the line or get surgery and have it aligned with less problems down the line.
Recovery time is about the same.
I chose to get surgery and will look at Paradigm Machine Works to see what type of Ti bolts they have in stock.
