Mrs levity and I had tried out our new 650b plus bikes in desert sand in December and were anxious to return for some more exploration. We spent two days pedaling washes and canyons in Anza Borrego State Park in east San Diego County. Weather was nice with mostly clear skies and daytime highs in the 60-70s. It had not rained in over 2 weeks, but the sand was still packed enough that climbing on the 6fatties at ~12psi was fine and rolling back down was a hoot.

it’s amazing how plants can survive in the desert and bloom so soon after a rain, in January no less

Despite all the cactus and thorny bushes we made it back without a flat. However, after loading the bikes I found a thorn from an Ocotillo completely imbedded in my rear tire. It didn’t leak until I removed it, but the Stans sealant inside quickly plugged the hole when I held my finger over it to slow the leakage. Needless to say, carry spare tubes in the desert!
