There seems to be a relationship between forum posting frequency and used gear price. The less often they post, the less of a deal.

I've had the frequent flyers here give me stuff for free more than once. Not junk, but brand new stuff they could get a few bucks for elsewhere. I've done the same for others. So maybe we (I?) do get a little protective of our little bartering station, but IMO, it's worth being protective about. It's not just a classifieds – it's a place we share and keep each other rolling.

That's a user POV. Admin has its own concerns, and rightly so.

The difference is this site is not all about making money and a huge volume of users. It's about community. If we get a little protective or maybe come off as not so nice it's typically not meant in a aggressive or mean way.

What I was hoping for from the OP was a quick reply saying: HI! Here's what I'm about, and I really appreciate you letting me post a sale here.

Actually, I was going to let the thread slide. I even got a "report" from an imtbmember who has not yet posted on this thread... their concern was about someone making their first post a classified on the site. I actually defended @Mfoga stating that he had been a member since 2016, even though it was his first post. I think all of you are right, I think @mike and @Danimal are right because we are "members" that we take better care of each other. The Classifieds are similar to the Bulletin Board offering Job Opportunities to other members. We are a community, not Camera Ads.

I have often thought about having a Classified that is open to the public because no doubt it would attract people to the site.

I have also thought about making the Classified Forum not visible to the public so as to not tempt them. What do you think of that?

I have also experienced the "frustration" of brand new members being upset with me via PM that I called them out on their first post being in the classifieds. As far back as I can remember, I have experienced Forums that had the software set up that new members could not post in classifieds until they had posted so many posts in other site forums. There is a reason for this. To keep a forum a community and not a For Sale Website.

I don't expect @Mfoga to understand when you spend most of your time on Pinkbike and certainly mtbr. But if you are going to sell stuff to our family, you have to be family. That is just how it is right now. It could change in the future, but not right now...

The only thing I ask is that we be nice to a new member who posts here first not aware of the rules, in hopes they become part of the community. I'm sure that Mfoga could easily misunderstand our humor, and our responses on this thread. First impressions are lasting impressions so lets do our best to provide a first good impression!

Yes, and no.......if it weren't for the classifieds being open to the public.....how would you keep selling all your Pro Flex crap.

Anyway, leave it visible to the public....when we sell things, the members see the posts and have just as much opportunity to jump on it....otherwise, I'd prefer a bigger pool of potential buyers.

With that said, coming here and registering, just to list an item for sale.....not acceptable. Then you just come off as a spammer.

I remember back in the old days at the other site....there would be days when you could click on the "New Posts" and the page would be full of FS Postings. I'll admit, I like the fact that there are very few FS ads on this board. We find ways of moving our wares when we need to, without becoming CL.

Maybe this is something that should be added to the New User Email you send out. Nip the problem before it becomes one.

Make Classies visible to members with 25 or more posts. That would motivate me to move out stuff that we're not using. And there is going to be some coming up...

Not just to the OP per se, but if anyone can't take a little good-natured jocularity now and again, then maybe this isn't the place one would want to spend time. Nothing odd about that; it's a big world and there's no need to waste time where you aren't enjoying it.

It's dead, who would buy a corpse? It's kind of like the floater at the bottom of the well in The Walking Dead.....if you look at it it moves, but barely.

 

If this could be set up, then it would be automatic and impartial. X number of posts before classifieds posting is available.
