I have been trying to bleed this set of brakes for about a week now. I cannot get fluid past the brake lever. It feel like there is a ton of back pressure and will blown the hose off the syringe if I press to hard. I finally rebuilt the lever and I’m still in the same situation. move tried pushing fluid in from the caliper side and it’s the same issue.

I ran fluid through the bleed port on the lever after unscrewing the pad in knob and it fills fine, but with that knob on, the fluid won’t go in.
    Any ideas?

So you can't bleed the lever when the pad contact knob is turned in? If this is the case, then you probably shouldn't be bleeding it that way. Most of the brakes want all the settings turned counterclockwise/opened all the way up.

I have tried it with pad contact knob all of the way out also, maybe half a thread grabbing and it’s still not working. The plunger is as far back as I can get it to go also.

If you unhook the brake hose from the lever, can you get fluid through it?

Same goes for the caliper.....if you disconnect the hose from the caliper, can you get the fluid to flow through?

No. The fluid never makes it to the brake hose on the lever end. If I remove the pad adjust knob, I can push fluid through the lever.

yes. I can get fluid through the caliper if I disconnect the hose.

Sounds like there is a blockage in the master cylinder. Best suggestion would be to disassemble it and clean it all out. Make sure it goes back the correct way. Perhaps something in regards to the pad adjustment is in backwards.

Hold down the lever some. It’s not documented well but that vintage needs it.

Sounds like there is a Chicken Nugget in your brakes.

Avid brakes have a tendency to blow the piston seals & block the fluids, sometimes bleeding it actually blows the piston seals in the process - you will see pieces of rubber in the fluid. Best to get a rebuild kit handy. Luckily they are still available from most retailers.
