Saturday morning rendezvous at 24th Street/Euclid Avenue in Upland. 9am shuttle. Logistics depends on number of riders, but self shuttle is most likely. Minimum 12.5 miles, 1,150' climbing / 3,300' descending. Pads recommended.

No strava. Start at Mt. Baldly Road/Barrett Stoddard Road, cross Cucamonga Creek, and end at 24th and Euclid.

Barrett Stoddard Truck Trail.jpgAttached is a picture of the primary route. Normally I would not advertise this [local to me] gem, but Monkey Piss cannot keep up with nature on maintaining this trail. What little tolerance I have for off-highway motorcycles is on account of BS (no pun intended) since they help maintain a rideable corridor.

I tried to upload a .kmz file but it is not supported. @Mikie, is there a way to upload .kmz (Google Earth) files?

I love Barrett Stoddard. Its islolated, rugged, and the views are some of the best around. You would be hard pressed to find a single soul out there with you. Id be down to do this ride (climbing it though as an out and back), just cant this weekend. Please let us know how it goes and what the condition of the trails is in.

Will do. I'm down to climb it as well, though I anticipate a few HAB sections. I've ridden it about 75 times and never climbed it! The trail remains the same for never more than 5 rides, as there are always new rockslides, tree falls, blow outs, vegetation encroachments, ruts, etc. Since I'm introducing it to a 1st timer this weekend, it will be a shuttle on Saturday.

Thanks Dan, I am familiar with this route and the area (live in Upland) but it has been a few years since I did all BS. Not sure I can make it this week but will try.

If nothing comes up, I'm definitely in for this ride. I've always wanted to explore this trail. What level of difficulty is the ride?

The trail overall is not steep, precarious, or too chunky, but it has sporadic sections that are steep, very exposed, and of high consequence. The trail overall is not overly technical until you approach 20mph, which is easy to do but hard to maintain, and there are hidden obstacles (i.e., rock fall, tree fall, blowouts, encroaching Chaparral white thorn, and boulders obstructed from view along narrow singletrack) where too much speed can ruin your day. The trail is wild and can be hard on the bike. If something breaks, it can be a long way out of there with no cell coverage. Tubeless tires and pads are highly recommended. Full face helmet and goggles optional, but not necessary. Closest comparison to other trails is SART from Angelus Oaks to Warm Springs Truck Trail, so I estimate an overall 5 or 6 out of 10 difficulty rating, relatively speaking.

I cleaned the entire ride only once due to significant trail maintenance and some luck. The Cucamonga wash was entirely HAB for me from 2010-2012, but now I clean it 75% of the time. A tree fell last year that used to take 20 minutes to brachiate through to get to the other side with the bike but now is easily HAB, and to date only The Dante has cleaned that section (and only once). There is a propped gate with a...you'll know it when you see it.

I appreciate the very detailed description. Sounds like an adventurous trail with a little of everything and I'm glad I never tried this going solo.

I went through a phase of riding this solo on game nights during the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a Kings sweater attached to my handlebars. Worked like a charm! Although one time trying to clear the culvert I fell over the edge and bashed my chin on what is ostensibly a water pipe. I needed several stitches; that was the game we lost to Phoenix and Shane Doan put the hurt on Dustin Brown.

Minimum 1 hour, 30 minutes ride time if we are a small group with no issues. 1 hour, 15 minutes if we ride Bomb Squad style and the chute just above Crestview Place is not mangled. Dante (Bettis' good friend) cleaned it last week (as in rode it, not fixed it).

I just got a voicemail reminder from my dentist. I have an appointment at 11am this Saturday. I should be fine if everything goes to plan and finish the ride by 10:30. But I might not be able to help with the shuttling. How many people are doing this ride?
I'll call my dentist to see if I could get a later time.

We propose to drive up at 9am and start the ride by 9:30. Finish the ride by 11:00am (under a best case scenario) and retrieve the car from the trailhead by noon. You can leave your car at the bottom and depart without having to go back to the trailhead, but that will not be likely before 11am if you ride.

I called the dentist and they don't have any other time for this Saturday. I'm gonna have to bailout on this ride and wait for the next one. I'll just ride later in the day and hit up maybe GMR or if I'm feeling crazy enough climb bs and out. Have fun

image.jpg Barrett Stoddard is a terrible place to spend a day...and bringing a bike along is just a drag. There are rocks all over. Gravity pulls everything down. It's too bumpy and not fun at all. Stay away from there!
