Here again is a futile attempt to conjure up some lunatics to ride bikes. For Father's Day [weekend] mama is offering me an all-night hall pass tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday). It's a free-for-all bonanza, and we can party at the moon tower, a casino, noodie bar, Tijuana, or just ride our bikes.

The Forks is an awesome institution of burgers and beverages. It's southwest of the north-ish part of Bass Lake.

10-hour round trip would make me late for breakfast. No go.

The trails up here are fun, but not worth 10hrs of drive time.

But if you're already there, for whatever reason, then they are worth it.

And it's closer to 6.5 hours from Orange County, not 5 hours. I've driven it. A lot.

Thursday June 29 at 11 PM. Short jaunt to Bonelli from my garage in La Verne with @redwoods to see about a Growler. This would be a short ride (6 miles of pavement and about 6 miles of dirt).

Urban jaunts after midnight are Gnar Gnar when the drunkers frolic! I plan on going early tomorrow morning, and maybe we can rendezvous tomorrow night in your neighborhood if you think we can avoid major roadways. Would you be riding your gravel bike?

Yeah, gravel bike or a good urbane hardtail would work.
Mostly suburban roads through South Pasadena to the arroyo bike trail then head up the fire road to the pond at debs park. A couple of short but fun single track options down.
Then we can avoid the drunk drivers after debs park-hopefully-just winding back through El Sereno and Alhambra neighborhood streets.

    I think that’d be 15-20 miles +/-.

    @Fueledbyex8 , I’m looking your way…you down?

I’m leaning toward bringing the commuter with 1.5-1.75” urban tires on this ride. PM me your address if you are still interested tonight.

    Bastian to the rescue!

If anyone ever needs supplies or extraction, call me.

I almost called @Faust29 and @rossage and @Luis and @burt and even Snake, but I wasn’t safe enough to disregard what time it was.

Well, we gave it a good effort. @DangerDirtyD made it to my house just after midnight, while we were sitting in the living room having a pre-ride beer my front tire started hissing out of nowhere.

I’d put fresh sealant in just a few hours earlier. I spun and shook the wheel up and it seemed to do the trick.

Off we went, passing the LBS in San Marino just around 1 AM, Dio noted the lights were on and the front door was open. He suggested we go over and bug them but I shrugged that off and we kept rolling to S. Pasadena. (We should’ve gone in for an extra tube)

after that, we hit the first little bit of trail through the arroyo before hopping on the paved arroyo bike path to Highland Park. Right as we got to the start of the trail my tire started hissing again and we stopped to throw a tube This was the first of three failed attempts to keep air in the tire.

In Highland Park, we started climbing up the fire road at Debs Park. If you haven't been to Ernest E. Debs Park, it's certainly not a destination for bikes but, the trails are nice for a hike and offer great views of DTLA and the surrounding neighborhoods along with a really lovely and shaded pond filled with turtles. (There are a few fun but short single tracks that don't seem to be official trails.)

The third and final flat happened right about the midway point in our ride. I went through 3 co2 cartridges trying to seat the tire with the little sealant it had left.

This was about the time Dio started brainstorming who to bug for an extraction run. It was just past 2 AM, cold, damp, a bit muddy.
I threw the towel in and called the kiddo to come grab us. He came down in his little Prius C and we stashed the bikes until we could get back to the house and grab my car with a rack.

All said and done, we ended up with a little over 7 miles and got back to my house just before 4 AM. No photos.
