Mountain lion deer kill in Aliso Woods?

The article is a little confusing. It sounds like they're implying they dropped it off at Santiago peak and then it already worked its way all the way down to Aliso.... Am I reading that right?

That article has a typo. Average male lion territory is 50 sq miles, not 500. But the point that the south coast wilderness is kinda small for a lion still holds. Lots of complacent deer in Aliso though. Hope he doesnt become roadkill trying to find his way back out.

 

Agree, I heard a mt lion was killed on the 73 at the 133 a few years back. And there has been an unofficial sighting in Laguna Niguel a few months back pretty much on the path that the article describes that this mountain lion took to get to Aliso.

 

Time for some hunting motion cameras. I love seeing the wildlife those cameras get. Have to put some in remote areas so they don't get discovered.

Yeah, poor guy got caught again.
Funny the article says they think it's the same lion as before. It would be totally obvious based upon the collar ID.
Looks like they'll release him again, but he seems to travel a lot.
Hard to get established as the new guy.

 

Anyone know where they released him this time?

I wonder why they don’t take him to San Mateo.

 

Any release point needs vehicle access for a 3/4 or full ton pickup. They would prefer no 4WD required, as they are generally not gonna push it.
They have generally been saying high near Santiago Peak, but I don't really buy that.
The peak itself would be bad as not good hiding options. Plus, I don't think CADFW wants to make that much of an effort.
San Mateo might be nice for this lion, but probably not.
Any good habitat is already gonna be taken by a dominant male.
This guy's excursions show that the area is full. There is no more room.
I think it will not end well for this guy.

 

Seems like putting him back in the same place doesn't make a lot of sense. If he could stay out of town, he could probably have a fine life in the three park area of Aliso, LCWP, and Crystal Cove. No other mountain lion competition at least and plenty of food, albeit a smaller territory than its normal range.

 

I wonder if they sprayed it in the face with water like we do when the kitten goes on the kitchen counter?

The way that guy gets around, wherever they released him, he’s not there now.

 

Been a while since I've seen A Full box of these but I guess it's warranted now.
