People everywhere lack two things right now - common sense and compassion.

I hope for a speedy and complete recovery for both the victim and the careless woman. The racer hit his face hard on the tarmac! :(

I have both common sense and compassion. But in cases like the title entry on this thread the compassion for the perp pretty much goes out the window. Stupid is as stupid does. If it only hurt the stupid I wouldn't care....

The cyclist was taken to hospital. But the lady was released at the scene. Both hit their heads pretty hard. Not sure what goes through hers. I’d have thought someone would have stopped her. But that common sense/empathy thing is becoming more scarce.

I like to think that I do. I don't have a lot of evidence to the contrary. I'm told that makes me boring.

Although, there are some who would say that just the fact that I (we) ride mt bikes means I (we) have no common sense.

I don't know if you saw the article about the 25 year-old girl who approached too closely to a momma grizzly and her cubs in Yellowstone. She should have gotten mauled. Instead she got a bluff charge... and then got to spend four days in prison, a year of probation, and a bucket of fines and fees.

I don't have both. Common sense...yes. Compassion...no. Being compassionate means you care enough about the person/situation/etc to actually do something. Most aren't this way, most are empathetic not compassionate. I am BARELY even empathetic, it's one of my many flaws. Similar to @mike my wife has both. She is more empath than compassionate, but WAY MORE than I would ever want to be. I can't relate to this and it causes strife on occasion.

Interesting. I've never considered that compassion is an action and empathy is a state or practice of understanding. I am definitely wired for intellectual empathy. My natural tendency is to immediately consider the point of view of the other. I am not an emotional empath in that I am not one of those who feels and wears the emotion of the other person. However, if compassion is an act, I am only passively compassionate - I am generally polite, and I'll help a bloke on the side of the trail, but I am definitely not the community activist, feed the homeless kind of guy. Too lazy and self-centered for that. Tails to ride. Waves to surf. Mountains to slide down.

And FWIW, I have almost zero compassion for the asshat woman who caused that accident.

TBH. I think most mountain bikers have both. Compassion is a byproduct of empathy. I know when began my foray into this sport i was much more enthusiastic and friendly. Over the years i watched as we as a group have been treated as the lowest form of trail user and become the villain of trail sports.

So, I’ve lost that enthusiasm and become a tad jaded ( i think most of us have )when it comes to having any type of empathy for people who do not respect us or our sport

Other trail users hate mt bikers because many of us are obnoxious and discourteous.

What is your opinion of motorcycles on you trails? That's the same way hikers feel about most of us. I wish they didn't.

We’ll, that’s kind of the whole point I’m making. I think most have become this way in the last 10-15 years. I’m not saying it’s right. But if we’re talking about common sense and compassion, those have gone out the window in regards to US. Because the 95% of us who are courteous and yielding on trails have been vilified.

I’m fine with motorcycles on any trail they’re allowed. We’re talking legal, right? I wouldn’t go on multipurpose trails like that.

Just depends where you live. People are much more polite here in the NC. I'm not saying it because I live here... it is just true. Part is culture, and part, in my opinion, is lower population density. LA County has the same population as the entire state of NC squeezed into a much smaller area.

When I bike in the state park, there are pedestrian only trails, and multi-use trails. The multi-use trails are one-way direction of travel (for bikes) so that hikers can walk into the direction of travel and see bikes (in most cases) long before they get close. Hikers step to the side of the trail, bikers slow down, there are a lot of "thank you's" and "have a great day!" and people move on. Plus, the use density on the trails is 1/10th what it is in California, so it is just easier to avoid stepping on each others' toes.

I think when you squeeze too many people into too small of a space, there is just more competition for limited resources. It's like trying to get a picnic table in Laguna Beach on a holiday weekend. No politeness allowed! :)

Yes. Spending time outside coastal CA is the best way to see how generally unfriendly and self centered the attitudes there are. Unless going to a metro area, people are categorically more pleasant outside of SoCal/CA.

Once you get off the popular (over populated) trails in SoCal, things turn around. I virtually never have negative encounters on Exploration, which is still pretty busy. Get a couple miles up the trails in Big Bear and negative encounters virtually disappear.

The epicenter of rude, dumfuk riders is San Juan Trail on Saturday; it radiates outward from there.
