Bvader.. when sandy got murdered it jacked up our family...
She lived well for nearly 14 years....
3 years is long enough wo a dog

 

My wife and I know some pain around lost family members, I am glad you are ready to embrace a new one.
Our house was too empty for a while... its much better now

Welp, the wife's 14-year-old Cocker Spaniel went to doggy heaven this morning. Thank [insert favored deity or object] I found her laid out on the kitchen floor, and the wife and kid did not. She'd (dog, not wife or daughter) been diagnosed with DCM, which is a common issue with the breed, about a year ago.

Wife and kid taking it hard. Since the dog died in the kitchen we had some hard and fast decisions to make this morning. Have to keep reassuring them the dog did not suffer.

I'll never understand pet people *EDIT* who aren't realistic about animals.

 

My condolences to MrsRWS & DaughterRWS. I’m a pet person and fully understand how attached you get with a good dog and how hard it is to loose them.

Losing a family member is never easy. My condolences to you and your family.

 

@konakc I just a couple months ago got a German Shorthaired pointer that I am training to become a trail dog. We lost our mastiff a couple of years ago and I decided I wasn't going to get another dog for years. Well, I caved. I have wanted a trail dog for so long. Now it seems like it is going to take forever to train him but, I will get there. Hopefully!!

 

one of the great joys in life is to run/bike on a deserted trail and have your dog be in doggy heaven exploring with you....
(i know some might frown.. but under some circumstances.. i just let her off leash ... she knew command to freeze)

 

Agreed, where my after work riding is perfect. Now if I can just get the dog to stay relatively close to me. He is definitely fast enough and has the endurance. Just not the obedience.

If there was one thing good about this Pandemic then it would be working from home for me.
As mentioned above, we officially took in a foster to own pup. We were looking for older dog since they are harder to adopt and also less getting into trouble however, since I'm still working from home and have not been travelling we opened up our selection to also include puppies.
Wow! This one took our heart away with her great character. She just needed some tender loving care due to her condition.


The first thing we did was change her name like the "Witness Protection Program". New life, new name, new hope!
She had a bad case of Mange and was rather malnourished. You can practically pet her on the side and she would tip over.
I'm not going to go into full detail about her history but this is what I've learned from this experience.
-Do not use MOTOR OIL!
It will not suffocate the mites.
Sulfur (a main ingredient to treat Mange) is no longer used in motor oil.
It can burn the skin.
It can cause a series skin reaction and will seep into their system.

Mange stinks!
Musky, pungent, rank smell of a wet dog ten time over.
Even for weeks when she was getting her fur back, she still had a faint smell of rank. You get used to it until you come back home after stepping out for chores and then you become thankful of this lockdown not inviting anyone.
Give them plenty of space BUT when they want some affection, give them the world! (even if they look like a walking zombie, lol!)
Be patient. Second day in "I" wanted to play so I tossed a ball at her. She dashed under the bed cowering. Most likely she must have thought it was a rock to keep her distance.

Most of all.... Dogs do FORGIVE!

So after many treatments, going to the best celebrity Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeons, consulting with the Bosley Institute.
I now give you Chloe!

Our last dog Sandy was a rescue... i took my two little girls to the OC pound and as soon as they saw the dogs in the pen... they said, we will take this one. .. this one. .. this one..
uh.. no honey.. its say quarantine..
ok this one..
well she looks to be twice as big as you...
ok.. let's ask the lady what she recommends for our family... and we got Sandy.. a young terrier/chihuaha mix that could run and run...
....
now our new dog Lucy is doing great.. sleeping thru the night... not too many accidents... going to the door when needed.. and
generally being a great little puppy...
but I would have thought I would miss our old dog less... seems that our whole family thinks about Sandy even more...
I don't want to replace old memories...
it sure is nice to create new ones...
