I have seen Coyotes in Fullerton Loop by Blair Witch, I got scared on Thursday evening ride cause one ran out besides me so I just stopped and tried taking out my phone to take a pic but it ran into the bushes really quick. Also saw a turkey on the Floop by the Dam during Tour de Trypthophan. Plenty of suicidal bunnies on the floop!

One time I was riding in Chino Hills with 2 buddies who were new to MTBiking, we saw something big and yellow with a black tail coming down a hill, at first we thought it was a huge dog . It stopped when it saw us and then crouched down, my buddy was like it's a mountain lion!! We slowly backed up and then turned around and started riding as fast as we could, I kept thinking maybe that was a bad idea. I have also seen bobcats and tarantulas up in Chino Hills.

We saw a road runner a couple of times at Bonelli Park, I remember Vince The Trail Slayer was keeping up with it going on the downhill right before you get to the airport.

Never seen any snakes on the trails so I'm kind of glad but I'm sure I will someday.

I have also seen deer in Marshall Canyon and El Moro.

I agree. Definitely at first a better smell with better side effects until the end then the consequences can be the same depending on the type of snake and type of smell.

Saw this guy at Blackstar tonight. I stopped and he just kinda kept moseying along towards me. When he got to a body length, I moved back.

Never rattled, but was hissing pretty loud.

Saw the a coyote at Whiting on Tues and Wed on borrego in the middle of the day. Both times it was just trotting along in the other direction and didnt even flinch at me bike when I passed. Not personally concerned, but there are a lot of families hiking borrego with small children. I’ve seen a lot more dogs in Whiting, which bring down the coyotes. I’ve stopped saying things to people though. Besides the standard f*ck off replies, I had a guy throw rocks at me as I started down cactus.

Gnarly. I want to see his Strava heart rate.

I would have drilled seven of those rocks at its head.

It doesn't appear he was on a bicycle. The second he crouches down to pick up a rock, he's bologna. He did deploy a rather sissy voice in his attempt to ward off the cat with his yelps and growls.

I saw a nice young king snake night before last, I had to look because the side markings look like our mutant rattlers. No rattle so I moved close and gazed at the little QT.

He sounded a bit sissy, but I don't want to judge him. Hard to know how any of us would react in that situation. I had a lion cub run towards me once whilst it was chasing a rabbit. Scared the :poop: out of me and I got the hell out of there. Almost killed myself looking over my shoulder for momma.

King snake? From all of them that I have seen throughout the years, I cannot think of any pattern or coloration similarity.

lol, right!? I think my ticker would have stopped! Over many years I’ve spotted 5 or 6 mtn lions up here, but have never felt threatened in any way. Of course none had Cubs....not that I could see anyways.

Without a bike serving as a barrier, he was practically naked out there! And all he could muster was a mild growl and a bunch of F-bombs...dainty.

I happened upon a big one enjoying a meal (didn't hang around to find out what it was) adjacent to Irvine Park. Lifted my bike above my head to appear bigger and backed out of there. The lion ambled away slowly in the opposite direction. Phew!

our mutant rattlers have a cream sawtooth patten on their sides. The king snake had the same pattern. The mutants come in a few colours from jet black with grey diamonds to lighter bands of dark and light. I was pretty sure it was not a pit viper but until I saw the tail I was going to be sure. Saw a very young gopher snake about 7 nights ago. Same thing check the head, check the tail. it was so young the tail would not have looked like rattles.

I've often wondered about that strategy. Getting beaned with a rock seems like a good deterrent, but I would worry that the posture of crouching down would trigger an attack. He did do it quickly. Would a different cat have reacted differently? Would a cat stalking him for a meal and not protecting its cubs have pounced? Wonderers be wondering.

It looked like when he started to crouch down or turn his head a couple times is when the cat bluff charged. But then again he seemed to do that again at the end when it turned and ran. Hard to say from just the phone's view, can't tell what he was doing.

His big mistake was walking toward the lion cubs at the very start. Never, ever do that. The fact that momma was being very visible yet keeping her distance, plus the bluff charges to look aggressive but looking back at the cubs means it was being defensive, not predatory. It could have attacked at any moment if it wanted to, but was trying to drive him away from the cubs. If it had been stalking him off the side of the road trying to remain hidden he would have been in deep doo-doo.

so many experts in here that would've done better. pfft! Most of yous probably would have shat your pants right there on the spot. I'd say the runner did a superb job of not getting killed.
