New to me, but had to have this bike. It’s a 98 Homegrown factory XT. Always love the Bass boat paint scheme. 0C4DF91C-8EF8-46A8-B75E-17B374B0A4B8.jpeg

New Stooge Scrambler straight from the UK in seven days... USPS did good by me! I was looking around for a rigid mountain bike, and it came down to a Jones, a Karate Monkey or this. Went with this 100% because I like the looks of this one more, especially the curved fork with the biplane crown. I thiiiiink I have most of the build, but didn't expect it for another couple of weeks. Stem, seatpost, and brakes might be where I come up short. I'll eventually put a dropper on, but no hurry. It was designed around B+ wheels, so I'll start there, but probably move over to 29er at some point.

Roughly assembled with the crown race and headset in place, but not installed. Twenty two braze on bolts got screwed in!

I sprayed the inside of the tubes with WD-40 Corrosion of Conformity Inhibitor, which is supposed to be better than T-9 or Frame Saver. Cheap insurance on a steel frame!

My new bike day today kind of came out of left field. I’d been planning to get a midlife-crisis level wonderbike for years, and I figured that turning 50 meant that this would be the year. But 2020 being what it is, that won’t happen. When I heard that my chosen bike wouldn’t be here until February, I decided to shut the search down.

And while I still have a serviceable if worn-in trail bike, my 2010 Roubaix gave up the ghost this year. It usually hangs in the garage all summer and comes out on wet winter Saturdays and the occasional 20-30 mile spin with the wife. So I wasn’t missing it yet, but the change of seasons got me thinking...

Behold the Salsa Warbird. A really nice carbon frame with a component spec just north of Walmart. Seriously, the cassette must weigh two pounds. I figure that I basically bought the frame, and I’ll replace whatever parts really bother me after a season. 17971A33-FE23-4F19-B2E0-29F4FAB982F1.jpeg
I got a short spin in after getting all the reflectors off. Quick trip at Peters Canyon and out to Irvine lake before dark. Pretty fun. I see many rides on Santa Anas fireroads in this bike’s future.

Hopefully its going to scratch an itch for another decade, I still have a trail bike to buy next birthday...

Congratulations! This was to be my new MTB year as well. But Vince started carrying the Laufs at JRA and after a couple of demo rides, Jennifer and I were sold. She reminds me every time we ride them that they're the best bike purchase we've ever made. I still want a new MTB though.

Given how much my road bike gets used for rides with the wife, I’d looked around for a tandem, to no avail. We’ll see this afternoon, but maybe the gravel tires will slow me down enough for her hold my wheel. Riding behind her while she trained for Ironman cost me a ton of fitness, and we’ve never been able to get her comfortable being towed around behind me.

Rough build up today. So far 100% parts bin bike. I'm going to have to run a longer rear brake hose as it needs to be routed on the downtube vs. toptube. I also need some brake pads, and the mounting hardware for the front adapter (I think I have the correct 180mm one). I'm going to get some swept back Moto bars when they come in stock, but for now am running a RF flat bar I had laying about. I'll probably throw a Brooks on instead of the WTB Diva on there now. I'm trying to make these old Shimano cranks work, but must be missing a spacer as there is some big time side to side play on them. Plus I need a chain ring. I think it's probably best if I just buy some new ones. I like the direction it's heading, and think the B+ wheelset looks good on it. So far only cash out has been for the frameset, and the only expenses I'm looking at are cranks and a handlebars. Nice!

Thank you. One of the few, happy surprises that came of this build. Everything else was delay, after delay type of thing. Luckily, it looks and rides great. Imo.

Maybe new bike week? Cranks, brake line, and pads arrived yesterday, so spent the evening and today (WFH) bolting it together. I'm not super competent with hydraulic brakes, but I think I've got the rear set up. Left the hose long (and the front short) as I will be getting new bars at some point in October and want to be future-proof. Found some old Mary bars and a 22.2 stem for them for now. Waaay too narrow, but fine for now. So now it's officially a rideable bike!
