I might check out those elbow pads. I have issues with a really sensitive ulnar nerve in my left elbow. I think it's out of place or something, gotta see the doc. But I really should protect it. Sometimes just putting my elbow on the table feels like I slam my funny bone. Would potentially do serious damage in a spill onto some san Gabes rock.

I dont have any "appropriate" MTB gear I just ride in jogger style sweats and oversize t shirts. I like the freedom, hate tight clothes. Wish I could get something to protect my legs that wont interfere with mobility. My legs have so many scratches and bruises since I started riding in January. Gonna stock up on long sleeve shirts for riding as soon as I get a chance.

That's been my experience. I normally wear sun sleeves which help a bit, but if I know a ride will have lots of buckthorn or other sharp/persistent brush I'll bring full arm pads and put them on for the descent.

My legs take a lot more abuse than my arms though. For backcountry rides I often wear thick knee high compression socks. Helps a lot with scratches. Again if I know it will be really bad, full length hard shell leg pads are the ticket.

I also tried a pair of these in the last year: https://concrete-visionary.com/product/bamboo-charcoal-knee-high-painkillers-socks-foam-sewn-in/ Cheap and similar to knee high socks but with padding sewn in which is similar to what is used in G-form pads. They work pretty well but I find them uncomfortable on rides longer than 2-3 hours. Maybe I just need to wear them more and build up callouses. Or just put them on for the overgrown part of the ride.

No easy answer @Faust29 but I think using layers might be the best ticket. Normal short sleeve w sun sleeve for the climb and something more heavy duty for the descent.

That, and bring loppers on rides. Take 5-10 mins and trim back the worst section, then it won't be as bad the next time.

Even though I have never liked the glossy look on the G-Form pads, this is the route that I'd go if I was having the problems you are. We have 3-4 riders in our extended riding group that ride with them in one version or another. We have two guys that are so covered up that they look like Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles, I call then Donatello & Michaelangelo now. Personally I overheat too easily and would prefer the scratches and blood.

I have used second-hand dress shirts from the Salvation Army as brush protection. Long sleeves, button down collar and cuffs, usually made of a thick cotton weave. They did not breathe very well but better than nothing.

I don't think Kevlar could stop a yucca needle.

I really like REI's hemp shirts. They are light and breath, but pretty tough. Won't stop yucca or cholla, but do pretty good on manzanita similar shrubs.
In fact I just bought the one I linked to that's on sale, so have three now!
