After a couple of Moscow Mules I decided it’d be a good idea to scrape off some ice build up in my kegerator before I put in a new keg. Well, I really chiseled the ice with a screwdriver and mallet. Great call, right? Was about done and all of the sudden Freon started spewing from a hole I managed to make in the backing. Called the kegerator manufacturer and they don’t have the replacement part. Can this be patched somehow with JB Weld and then top off the Freon? Or am I better off taking the parts and converting a mini fridge to a kegerator? TIA!

JB Weld couldn't hurt. Adding refrigerant may be tougher.
When I was in Jr High I JB Welded a hole in a lawnmower crankcase. Repair shop it would cost hundreds to fix it. My repair ran fine for 10+ more years.

You'd need to pull a vacuum to void the moisture that has gotten into the sealed system before recharging it with freon. It can be done, but you'd probably need a service call from a refrigerator repair tech with the proper equipment.

Excellent thought! Once he gets his new bike, then he can deal with the fridge.

I'm going to try and fix it with JB Weld, install a bullet piercing valve and have a buddy help me with the vacuum and recharge. See if it works... Otherwise I'll have to dip into my new bike fund cuz I really, really need more beer in my life right now. Fingers crossed!

Fair point, @herzalot ! Def not hard to get. So much cheaper in a kegerator.

Either IPAs or Pale Ales. Last keg was Trigger Finger from Artifex (San Clemente) and next one is going to be the regular IPA from Barrelhouse (San Luis Obispo).

Homebrew Talk is a good place to search regarding this. From a quick scan of the comments in the thread below it seems that while some say it can be fixed you might be hopping down a rabbit hole that could be expensive. Good luck

I need to convert my kegerator from my homebrew setup (soda kegs) back to accepting regular kegs. Just not sure I want to deal with trying to get my co2 refilled right now.

It’s alive!!! Was able to fix it with some JB Weld, bullet piercing valve and some RTV silicone. A buddy helped me vacuum and recharge the Freon. I’ll let it run for a day or so before ordering a new keg. Hope it holds, but so far so good!

It’s alive and it now has a keg in it! Picked it up last night from Laguna Beach Beer Co - Greeter’s Pale Ale. Was going to get the Barrelhouse IPA, but decided to support a little local brewery that actually names a lot of their beers after our local trails, e.g. Luge, Waterworks, Old Emerald, Mentally Sensitive, Machete, etc. Cheers!
