I have one of these and I rarely use it to wrench on. Great for airing up the tires and shocks though.

I’m not sure you’d be as pro holding the bike though. I hear that takes years of apprenticeship followed by several years of experience.

search craigslist for a used one. You can usually find a decent stand that someone should have never bought.

I'm getting what I think is a slight rub from the rear rotor (against one pad) on the DV9, but it's only rubbing in one part of the rotation, and only under load. Rotor is straight, and pads have been adjusted. Everything out back is torqued to spec, and it doesn't happen at all when coasting, or when I spin the rear wheel with the pedals with the bike on the stand. It's worse in higher gears at speed, so something is flexing, but I can't figure out how/what. Any ideas?

Hard to say without seeing it happen. First thing to check is for a slightly out of true rotor.

It doesn't take much for a bent rotor.....to look almost true, to rub the pad under load. Everything will flex a little bit.

Try pulling the brake lever in just a little bit til that spot on the rotor starts to rub. Either tweak the rotor, or try to recenter the caliper off just a hair to compensate.

If it was doing it all the time, it could be a host of other things, but since it only happens on 1 spot under load, it definitely makes it easier to locate.

great thread... i tinker with my bike and know my limitations... just like computers, if i tinker too much and mess it up, i know the LBS will be there to fix my errors.

i just bought a spoke wrench after my ride last week... my wheel was super wobbly after some fun downhill section :cautious: i watched a few utube vids and figured what the heck... i cant mess it up too badly... now the rear wheel is only wobbly where i have the dent... lol rolls just fine till the new wheels are installed Wednesday!! :sneaky:

i figure if you know your limitations and tinker as you gain confidence, then the bike really isn't that hard to keep in good shape. doesn't hurt to bribe a local with food and/or whiskey from time to time!!

i do want to take some classes and will most likely do that to gain more confidence. i may have to source a HT frame now that i'll have some less wobbly wheels that will need a new home!
